Trying to contact owner of 'Apache'

He used to post here as 'Gser' but have not seen his posts for a few years. I'd like to get in touch if anyone knows where he may be contacted. Apache was a lovely Hudson tug-style and he was fitting it out magnificently, I always admired it.

He also had a lovely boat 'Berengia' I think it was called that he sold to buy Apache - glorious woodwork.

I believe he still has Apache but is no longer a full time liveaboard. If you do facebook then he posts there quite often with updates on his numerous hobbies and activities (including woodwork).

Pretty sure Apache is a Norton Canes boat that he fitted out himself, not a Hudson 😀

Yes you are right - it is a Norton Canes. It has a lovely engine, and nicely done steel.

Do you know what name he posts under?

He used to moor next to us at Frouds Bridge and we last saw Apache up near Chester.  Unfortunately I have forgotten his name, although his boats I remember better.

I will send you a PM. We moored behind them once on the K&A and our dog instantly became best friends with their  bearded collie "Spike", (who has now sadly gone). We then spent quite a bit of time together doing long dog walks and a fair few drinks.

Hudsons are good looking boats. I like both Hudsons and the Northwich Trader even though others like to poke fun.

The sad thing is that almost nobody is making this sort of "boaty" boat anymore and just turning out widebeam "eurocruisers" and now a narrow version of the eurocruiser....square backs with a steel "dodger",  big bus windows, lots of chrome etc etc. I would rather see a Hudson anyday.

I think the problem with Hudsons is that they attracted a certain type of owner who went for an immaculate shiny paint job and maybe a little too much bling, and this sort of empasises the shape of the front which is almost over the top..

I have seen a few older Hudsons with nicely faded paint and they look rather good.

The early ones were better looking from the front and from the rear. I asked Mr Hudson himself at a Braunston show why he had changed the design of the front which he denied doing but if you look at an older one then it is clearly evident. I think they changed when he started buying in pre cut steel. If you look from the rear they have a strange thing happen around where the engine room doors are.

Yes, I met somebody with one of the older boats and she explained the shape thing to be, the front difference is actually quite subtle but also makes quite a difference if that makes sense. I think I would not have noticed if it had not been pointed out to me, but assuming the faded paint boats are also the older shape version this could explain things. I expect the new shape would still look better with a slightly more "lived in" look.

There was one moored at Thrupp for many years and saw it this trip moored ether on the N Oxford or Coventry, definitely not shiny

I suspect several of the big builders, Colecraft, XR&D etc could build a reasonable trad shell if asked but Hudson was almost evangelising the the trad style, or rather his trad style and prospective boaters going to the shows would have their eyes opened to this style of boat..."I could own a boat like that" rather than "thats a market for specialists".

I do wonder if the rise of the RCD is also a big factor, is it possible to buy a boat with a vintage engine in an engine room? even the Beta JD3 has gone. And I suspect a deeper boat has problems getting the hull fittings 10" above the waterline etc etc.

Sounds like the Apache that's moored in Tattenhall Marina for the last 6 years or so. A boat I've admired, fairly sure he went ashore when his Dad was ill, seem to remember talking to him in a lock on his way in to Tattenhall. Rarely see anyone aboard unfortunately but the boat is well cared for.

I think you're right about that, I think he posted his intention to move onto the bank to look after his dad and sell Apache here on the forum at the time, too.

When he was on the K&A he had a butty too that he was fitting out as a woodwork workshop (I think). It was the butty that he sold. Looking at his facebook he still has a couple of big trips on Apache each year. It would be nice to meet up again.

Apache is indeed a Norton Canes boat, originally built for Ed Rimmer. Early on, it carried my lettering. I won’t dwell on the story of its early years, I think it ended up at Reading at some stage. Until a few years ago I co owned Resolute, another Norton Canes, with Graham Edgson the builder. She was a beautiful boat, attracting positive comment wherever she went. Despite having “ Norton Canes Boatbuilders “ on the cabin sides in 6” letters, I was often asked

” That’s a beautiful boat....is it a Steve Hudson?” I’ll leave you to imagine the reply.....

People confused by the fact that Norton Canes Boatbuilders now occupy Steve Hudson's old yard?

Yes, the back panel was painted over by the previous 'owners' but some of your work still remains!! It needs the panels painting again if you're still doing that sort of thing.
