Car V Boat parts

Morning all.

Getting together service parts for our Honda outboard. Is there any reason why I can't use a car oil filter as opposed to an outboard filter if the part number matches? Obviously the boat filter is twice the price!

If the numbers and any letters are IDENTICAL and both are HONDA parts (not copies / pattern) that I do not see why not.

However I would have thought that a Car oil filter is way, way bigger than a 10hp OB oil filter, I'd suggest that a 'car sized' oil filter will hold more oil than the OB engine does.

Maybe have a look at a car version and see if it is the same size / shape / fitting as the one on you OB, worth a punt.

Honda motorbike parts may be where to look.

The filter for the outboard may well be physically smaller, but if you can get one with the same part number and keep your old filter to check the size, then it should be ok.

You're lucky in that you can find your filter.Just done an oil change on my Tohatsu outboard and the book says it has an oil strainer, but doesn't say where it is.

Damned if I can find it with the engine still on the boat!

Glad you found your leak by the way.

Its probably deep inside the engine where it picks the oil    up out of whatever forms the sump, not normally a service part but can cause problems if oil changes are neglected.

Who makes Tohatsu? Often wondered if they're part of another company, guessing Japanese so can't be any worse than any other motor.

As for the leak, I've made steel legs and raised the fuel tank tray 10", outlet well above water now. Being a cynic I'm still thinking that was far too easy a cure for a big water leak 😞

Today we are grinding out and filling lots of spider web cracks in the gel coat under the Hull, although I'm hoping these wouldn't let that amount of water in, in a day (about 4 gals)

Seen some info on the internet which describes them as Toyota/Tohatsu.

Thanks Tony. Had another look for this elusive strainer this morning.Took a box like fitting under the sump off which looked likely, but it was an expansion chamber for the exhaust.A small outlet and when exhaust pressure builds,it exits through the prop hub.The strainer wasn't in there.

Removed another small housing which looked likely, but it was a sort of metal plug and this looked to be in the cooling water circuit.

The engine is Euro 4 compliant and looks to have a lot of gubbins crammed into a very small space, and I am sure it needs specialised knowledge to service it properly.Have searched the internet and found plenty of generalised information, but nothing really technical. This is rather annoying as I prefer to do my own servicing.

Beginning to regret selling my previous boat with a simple BMC 1500 diesel.

Bullet proof then

Hopefully yes.But if something does go wrong I don't know if I will be able to fix it on the cut as it looks like quite a complex box of tricks.I dread having to take the carb off.

A previous boat had an older Yamaha 9.9 and was easy to service and do general maintainance as most components were quite accessible.

As with most Japanes companies they are a huge conglomerate making everything and anything, mining their own materials and have their own bank payrolling them.

Tohatsu is a huge conglomerate and their outboard divison manufacturers OBs in their own name, they manufactured all of the Nissan OBs (branded as Nissan) and manufacture all Evinrude engines 15hp and below (badged Evinrude) and since 1988 have manufactured Mercury engines (for the Brunswick Corporation).

Tohatsu is the second biggest OB manufactuer in the world.

Because then their boat parts won't look so expensive? Honda OEM motorcycle parts prices attract similar outrage in my experience. :)

I was astonished when I found that Honda sold brake pads singly and not in pairs and I could get a full set from ferodo for less than half the price of one from Honda.

I also find that astonishing... although their astonishing prices no longer astonish me! ;)
