BMC 1800 finally Bled and Running But what is the best starter battery

A diesel van battery  with a high cranking capacity, size is less important. An 80Ah battery is plenty with cranking capacity over 300 will be fine. Bear in mind it was only a BMC Sherpa van engine!

I'd be inclined to use a 100 or 110 amp starter battery. The larger capacity might be needed as these engines are slowish starters generally, especially in the winter, and the use of the heater plugs will give the battery a hard knock before you even attempt to start it. Also if the boat is not not used for a while without the battery on trickle charge it will loose some charge, hence the extra capacity needed.

A 643 or 644 size battery will be ideal.  The difference is in the terminal layout and a quick google will get you dimensions.  About 100 Ah depending on maker and usually found on trucks, so plenty of cranking capacity.  Tayna, Shield, batterymegastore all do them.  Get a decent brand since they work quite hard when it is cold.
