I got stopped at Whitchurch Lock on Christmas about 10 years ago. A lock gate was jammed and would neither fully open nor close. A team of divers turned up on Boxing Day morning and retrieved from under the gate one of those infernal near-solid rubber pipe fenders that inexperienced narrowboaters think are cool to have dangling from the sides.

 

Point being though, that the EA were on the case in a flash even at Xmas!

According to someone on the Thames forum when the collar strap at Boveney cracked a few days ago the EA found that the anchoring point for the winch which one would usually use to haul the gate into position was out of date on its safety test certificate. 

 

So they (EA) had to bring in a road crane. 

 

Whitchurch lock does not have road access so if the same thing happens then it will have to be a floating crane. 

 

EA suggest tomorrow lunchtime for fixing it. 

 

I did meet a decent looking HiAb barge at Boulters lock this afternoon but they were not specifically on the way to Whitchurch lock. They might be now ! 

 

It's rather naff considering its a 1 or 2 hour job normally and the locks are provided with winch attachment points for this very purpose !! Who is it that lets these sorts of things lapse.

Same people that let the River Nene locks run out of spares gearboxes and motors when expecting a record year for boater visits...
