Moorings near Blackburn

Hi

We’re travelling from Wigan to Barrowford over the next few days for the first time. Can anyone recommend a pleasant, safe, overnight mooring west of Blackburn for one night? Doesn’t need to be near any shops or other facilities.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi, the nicest moorings before Blackburn are Riley green. Rings and armco and lots of space. There was also some armco and possible mooring around Stanworth bridge, if you want to get a bit closer before going up Blackburn the next day. Apparently people do stay overnight in Cherry tree too, there are a few rings here but some of the concrete has fallen into the canal, and it's a bit more urban although seemingly a pleasant enough suburb. Only stopped there briefly for the very handy sainsburys though. Blackburn was really quite pleasant to go through. Much nicer than I expected and locks in good condition, unlike those further east! After the locks Eanam wharf where the carribean restaurant is is safe or by bridge 106 and Rishton reservoir if you want something quieter and rural. Depth at the towpath isn't great on much of this bit of the L&L (and my boat is very shallow drafted!) but there was 1 boat length ok here. Otherwise Rishton visitor moorings has 2 boats length or plenty of nice deep armco before bridge 110. 😁😁

I have just come back that way. It's a beautiful canal and so quiet compared to the Midlands! Didn't take long when getting back to the Bridgewater to experience the first boat pulled free of a mooring and general canal rage 😂

Safe travels!

Riley Green is probably the best before Blackburn with the added bonus of being close to the Royal Oak pub.

Going east of Blackburn there's a spot just beyond the pipe bridge after Fosters swing bridge (115) that has in my opinion the best view anywhere in the network - right across the Ribble valley to the Bowland fells. It's not perfect as you can hear the M65 a bit but the view...

I don’t know whether the Top Lock pub at Wheelton are still doing it but when it was only outside spaces open their app had an option for location of canal. It was designed for anyone who was sitting on the benches at the lock but it worked for getting orders delivered straight to the boat as well.

We are moored at Church, just before bridge 113. A short wooden landing stage with rings and lots of goose pooh! Only room for one boat. We will probably leave later today when the rain eases, or tomorrow morning (31st). We are heading East through Blackburn so useful thread for us too!

Happy boating

We passed you there yesterday morning and have never fancied that spot. There’s better mooring 1 1/2 miles further on, just south of bridge 109.

Another vote here for Riley Green on the visitor mooring, just SW of bridge 91a. It was sad to see the remains of the pub still there. If it’s not going to be redeveloped after all these years, it would be better to remove the little that is left.

That's the problem with never knowing what is around the corner ! 😀

Yes we have too. It's  just after the last swing Bridge West bound.

Also the Rishton VM are OK and the bacon butties from the adjacent cafe are excellent

Any where on the long straight outside Blackburn after the railway is also quite pleasant.
