Anyone fancy an MSC transit this Thursday?

My wife and I are planning to go from Ellesmere Port to Manchester this Thursday (29th July 2021) on our narrowboat Westering. We've done all the paperwork etc. Just wondered if anyone out there (with a valid seaworthiness certificate etc) fancied bringing their boat along too...? Always more fun with other boats...

Plan is to moor in Salford Quays Thursday evening, up Pomona Lock Friday morning.

How do you get a seaworthiness certificate for a Narrowboat?

You must have one before being allowed onto the MSC - a surveyor comes and checks your boat.

It is not really a 'sea worthy' check just a MSC (suitable for private commercial waterway) check. - (Navigation lights etc)

It's not so much seaworthy as "not going to sink on the Manchester Ship Canal". Many years since we had one, but IIRC it was mainly hull openings, engine sounds OK, bilge pumps, life jackets on board, etc.

So is it as cursory as that needed for the Diamond Jubilee Pageant?  We were instructed to obtain 2 buckets in case we needed to bail out our boat! Despite showing them the bilge pump!

If you go onto the MSC website you will see the examination 'list' for what is required.

In fact , it is a 57 page doument so you may wish not to be dismissive and read what is required,

It is not unachievable on a NB, not even demanding for a well founded boat and crew, but it is a bit more than 'have a bucket available'.

What do you consider to be a 'adequate' anchor and cable ? Would the surveyor agree with you ?

Do you have lifejackets on board for the number that the boat is rated to carry (not the number who are on the boat) ?

Here is is to save you the effort of looking
