Jonathan Goldberg was selected as the resident photographer with the Canal & River Trust in 2019, with a brief to document the inland waterways around the country. His images from his travels around the UK are on show at the National Waterways Museum.

To be honest I disagree, I would have expected better from a 'Resident Photographer'

What's wrong with them? Not enough photos of "real boaters", too many photos of "non-boaters"? Don't forget that CWDF isn't the intended audience...

The ones on view in the link are fairly uninspiring snapshots.

I found some of them fairly ho-hum too. The one in Standedge Tunnel is quite dramatic.

And apparently the Paddington Arm crosses the North Circular Road on a 'bridge'.

I spotted that, but I think the photographer can be forgiven for a lack of specialised vocabulary.

In any case, the first definition of "aqueduct" which I found says "an artificial channel conveying water, typically in the form of a bridge".

Shame they didn’t go further into Standedge

Doesn’t the caption say the canal crosses the North Circular at Stonebridge? I believe that’s correct?

I don't think anyone suggested it wasn't correct.

That's a striking image (your own photo?) but gosh, it must have been purgatory for boat crews who had to leg their loaded craft through there.

Doesnt it say the canal crosses the North Circular at Stonebridge- and isnt that where it does cross the N Circular?

I misread Athy, and it does say the bridge at the start of that phrase, my bad.

Its my photo taken a few weeks ago , the legging record through the tunnel was around 1 hr 25, it took us 1 hour 45 to be driven through by a very pleasant volunteer.

Very average.

The composition in most is all to cock and the use of light hopeless.

The Standedge tunnel shot is about the best.

There are loads of better shots here:-

I spotted an error in the description accompanying the Regency Wharf photo where it wrongly stated that Birmingham has more canals than Venice. It doesn't.

Venice has far more canals than Birmingham, but Birmingham has more miles of canal than Venice :)

Is that because Venetians don't know what miles are? Does Venice have more kilometres of canals than Birmingham has miles? 😃

I suspect the brief was based on a political correct one

When you look at the work of people like the late Harry Arnold, there seems to be a tendency to loose the quality of the past photographers,  be they amateur or professional.

As to statement of more miles of Canals in Birmingham, considering the 1911 boundary changes, the different canals, branches, private arms and basins, there is a reason for the title.

Venice has about 150 canals, consisting of a collection of tiny islands joined together with bridges and walkways, each canal being individually named. No doubt somebody on here will tell me how many canals Birmingham has if you count the different branches/arms, but it's far less than that (I'd guess at around 20 canals?)

But Birmingham has more miles of canals (35 compared to Venice's 20), and the common mistake is people saying that Birmingham has more canals than Venice instead of saying more miles of canal :)

Then of course you have the issue of what constitutes being in Birmingham because as we know, much of the BCN isn't actually in Birmingham, and some of the canals which are in Birmingham aren't part of the BCN. Confusing or what!!!

So, remove the "s" from "canals" and it's correct: Brum has more canal than Venice.
