Stoppage today between Harecastle and Etruria - anyone know why? Notice just says "at request of external party", presumably the police.

I got that alert, thought it was a bit odd too as it normally says police incident or 3rd party contractors. Perhaps vague is the new specific?

Again they usually say if its demolition or other works to buildings. 

All sounds very cloak and dagger.

And suggests that any 'external party' can be granted a canal closure without giving a valid reason.

Please bear with us during this short but necessary stoppage, in compliance with a request from Staffordshire Police. 

Whilst the visitor moorings at Middleport Park are closed for the duration, suitable alternative moorings are available just to the north at Westport Lake and south at Festival Park.

Navigation will be restored by 6pm on Thursday 22nd July at the latest; we'll let you know straight away should the canal be open any sooner.  Thank you for your patience.“

The request to close the canal and towpath is no longer required by Staffordshire Police.

It is hard to imagine the impact that this would have had on holiday makers during the peak time of the year, 40 southbound passages through Harecastle with nowhere to go, hire boats with only 5 days to do the four counties.
