The rising price of Oak in the passed few months.

Featured Posts

I have noted that in the last six months the price of Oak stripwood has gone up by more than a 3rd, Six months ago I paid £8.99 per length of 46 x 8 x 2400, today I was charged £15.60 for the same item.  According to the manager of our local 'West DIY', he no longer gets a price list from the suppliers, instead a list of whats in stock and a invite to put in a sealed bid.

Everything is going up and up in price. Suppliers are blaming covid and the lack of supplies because of a ship that was stuck in the Suez canal even thoughthat ship was unstuck weeks ago. It's just an excuse for suppliers to hike prices.

That ship was impounded until yesterday when compensation insurance was finally agreed.

There is s massive shortage of building products across the board, some boat builders are also slowing builds due to short stock of everything from steel, electrical, ply and other wood,  even paints.

Wonder where the oak comes from? France maybe?

A lot used to be from France as they seem to be happy to invest in hardwood forestry, although it's been a while since I checked I suspect more is coming in from Eastern Europe nowadays

Plus the States of course

Actually I've just re read the OP's post, Dunno who West DIY is but wandering around B&Q I noticed their oak and looked at the price and nearly fell over. I usually get my pieces up to 1M ish from oak tables and such like. Not worth much as dark gloomy furniture but I have a planer / thicknesser so I just put pieces through that. The local timber yard also does oak but it's not easy to get. Try E bay too.

As of 1745/8 the ship was clear of the Suez canal, but anchored off Port Said, at the Med end of the Suez Canal undergoing a diving survey. When she is cleared her destination will be Rotterdam, before calling at Felixstowe so if you are waiting for something on board her you stll have a little time to wait.

West End DIY (Not 'West DIY' Auto correct) is a small local DIY chain (Ten stores) in Northampton and Cambridgeshire which provides a very good service to its customers. Has a very useful cutting service where you only pay for the bit your need and not a whole sheet like the big chains or charge for cutting.

As for using old hardwood tables, the price has rocketed. The two local charity shops are charging silly money and are getting it.

Huge shortage of certain plastics too, ones arising as  a by product of Kerosene, not surprisingly.

Very little Jotun epoxy paint left currently too apparently. It will all sort out soon.

The "farmer" who chopped down and burnt the lovely oak in the field nearby might be upset if he hears the price it could have fetched  though the housing plans may alleviate this upset.

As an update, Ever Given finally left Port Said anchorage tonight
and is on passage to Rotterdam, ETA 25th, so if you are waiting for something on board not too long to wait!

And the quality is going down and down and down. I have never rated the quality of most woods that I buy from, so called, timber merchants and I don't know about the quality of exotic stuff like oak but pine, plywood etc is absolute rubbish. The ply is unlaminating in places and there are large gaps between the layers. Most of this junk is coming from China but I have had stuff from Latvia and other mid european countries that is just as bad. I have even sent wood back to the timber merchant that I buy my wood from because it is unusable. don't even think of getting "proper" marine ply. It's non-existant. Suppliers keep telling me that WPB ply is as good or better, it isn't it's just the same old rubbish that will de-laminate in weeks.

Rotterdam on the 25th by the looks of things so I'm guessing Felixstowe 3 or 4 days after that.  Which is a shame as I'm away around then and I did intend to go and get a picture of it.

Fortunately, I have enough well seasoned English Oak in my workshop to outlast me, and I still have a decent supply of Cuban and Honduras Maghogany despite offloading quite a lot to a couple of woodworking friends.

It is still available from specialist Marine timber Merchants like Robbins of Bristol, but it is very expensive - £127 for a 1220 x 2440 sheet of 4mm , up to £410 for a 25mm sheet Plus VAT.
