Rochdale lock 9 closed (Black pit)

They've installed a pump at Lock 16 - presumably to pump water from the river to the canal, but that has failed, and there's a leaking top paddle at 16, so the pound 16-17 is closed.

And there's a tree down across the canal and towpath at Lock 5.

and still a car in the cut at Smithy Bridge and the gate problem on the Rochdale 9 has escalated.

We were going to set off last Sunday but CRT said they half expected the gate problem to be a bit more complicated so we delayed a week, lucky as we would have been stuck at the badly parked car with little prospect of reversing.

Have had two more phone calls with CRT in the last couple of days and both times they have been well informed and knowledgeable.

Any hints and tips for getting a deepish boat up the Ashton? ?

We have kept  "deepish" boats on the Ashton for nearly 50 years and passages of the canal by these boats is well into 3 figures. The only difficulties you may encounter maybe reduced level in a pound, usually solved by running water down from  the next lock.At the moment, there appears to be plenty of water feeding the summit level from the Peak Forest and HNC. @bobl on this site can provide up to date information  and advice

Thanks

A few passing boats (and CRT) have reported some low levels and empty pounds.

Letting a bit of water down is pretty much routine stuff, though sometimes tricky as you are stealing your own water. Many times towpath walkers have warned us of empty pounds ahead when in reality they are just a few inches down and exposing a bit of mud.

If nothing else goes wrong on the Rochdale then should be going up the Ashton Thursday week, keep that water flowing.

I think there is still a car parked in the Rochdale at present.
