Will definitely buy a proven brand whatever we choose, we're not loaded but understand the value of buying decent kit! ??

Boat deaths prompt carbon monoxide warning

 PUBLISHED: WEDNESDAY, 16 JUNE 2021

THE deaths of two boaters from carbon monoxide poisoning on their boat on the Ouse in York has prompted more warnings.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch's (MAIB) report told that post-mortem examinations found the primary cause of death for both men was carbon monoxide poisoning with their boat not fitted with a carbon monoxide detector, Alan Tilbury reports.

Faulty heater

This has resulted in a safety warning being  issued after the two men died on the boat as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty heater.

Ronald Vincent Holmes, (60), and Stephen Jewitt, (63), died after returning to the vessel moored in York on the 3rd December 2019 after socialising with friends.

Concerns

After concerns that they had not returned home a search was made of the boat and their bodies then discovered. It was ascertained that a diesel-fuelled cabin heater had been switched on during a trip that was faulty, causing the deaths.

Alcohol and caffeine were also found in their bodies. It being likely the effects of alcohol made the two unaware of the early signs of the carbon monoxide.

Captain Andrew Moll, Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, urged all boat owners to ensure they fitted an alarm and tested it regularly.

I also thought I could maybe install a small on-demand gas water heater, there is a good location for this on the wall between the galley and bathroom, so near all the hot water taps, and the gas pipe to the Alde passes through the same spot. But would it be possible to plumb this is in without losing the calorifier as a hot water source?

If you want to install an instant gas water heater in addition to your calorifier the simplest was is a manual L-port valve.

Hot water feeds from the calorifier and gas water heater go to each side of the valve so the hot water going out to the hot water side of the plumbing (to taps, shower, etc) goes out of the bottom port in this picture. This means you only ever have one source of hot water.

We had problems like yours, couldn't heat the calorifier and radiator at the far end of the boat, even after endless bleeding and different combinations of radiators switched in and out of circuit, in the end we installed a supplementary pump in the circuit at the far end and it has sorted the problem. One like this https://solarproject.co.uk/page2.html   cheaper  are available on ebay or amazon, worth a try?

Passed a boat the other day, not sure where though, that had a healthy array of solar panels in addition to a relatively small panel that had tubes of some sort with water pipes connected. I’m guessing that was a system that heats the water. Seen it on houses but not a boat before.

I saw a couple like that down the K&A vacuum tube units

Once again we come back to a solid fuel burner with a back boiler feeding a gravity heating system being the best for a live aboard boat

Except in summer when a solid fuel fire is the last thing you will need.

Solar Dump system will be the best way to go about it in summer.

Many Youtube videos on how to do it.

Here is one that uses existing 240v immersion element.

Personally I am going for a 12v Immersion heater element that I can run directly off the switched load of my Solar MPPT Controller to heat water using excess solar capability.

Obligatory link to my experiences with solar water heating on board. Now in its 14th season of use on my boat.

That's really interesting cheers! Not sure we've got enough space on our roof but it's cool to see different options!

OK I'm puzzled. We've got an upright Alde which is actually plumbed to provide hot water and space heating via a run of low profile fin-rads. If I could be bothered I'd isolate the heating circuit but I can get washing / washing up hot water in maybe 30 mins running Alde set to 3 or 4 and room stat permanently set high.

Stoopid  question - can you see the water level in the Alde header tank? Put your finger on the top of the pump when it is running - you should feel the shaft turning (and hear it running!!). How hot does the body of the Alde get?

my system has 2 stop valves one for the radiators and one for the calorifier.
i also fitted a second calorifier so now have enough hot water for 8 x 5 minute showers each morning or for 2 showers for 3 days. the Alde only heats one. 10-20 minutes for enough for 2 showers.
and i fitted a heat exchanger (£25 on ebay) so the waste engine heat heats the radiators. it takes 2-4 hours to heat the 65 ft boat from 10C to 26C and added a heater from a scrap van to dry clothes etc. To avoid overloading the water pump i added a second pump into the primary loop that i turn on once the engine has heated to 70+C. saves a lot of gas when the engine is running.
