OldGoat
I've seen lots of boats with very smart looking kitchen paneled cupboard doors. Where do folks get them? I've started looking at Howdens, Ikea but found nothing so far. What am I doing wrong, where do I look? Mebe needs to be a national supplier as I'm Darn Sarf. I guess the size would be around 34 x 48 cm and I'm looking for six in all. Suggestions welcomed
philjw
There are lots of companies who specialise in supplying replacement doors for existing cabinets. Try googling replacement kitchen doors. I had some made to order a few years ago for the house. They were wrapped MDF but you ought to find something in wood.
Detling
Getting wooden doors is like finding rocking horse dropping these days everything seems to be MDF (compost if allowed to get damp) and a wrapping over them, some do look like wood but aren't I got some a few years back that were real wood but this last year I have been looking for our new kitchen and can only find bespoke expensive wooden/ ply doors
Jennifer McM
Have a look in in B&Q they have solid wood doors, be careful of that dreaded word 'effect'!

My experience to date (since penning the request) pretty well mirrors all your comments! It seems there's a highly organised set of companies with advanced machinery that turn sawdust into convincing looking doors - that is until they get wet. To pay what to my mind equates to the cost of what was hitherto made out of real wood, but now is wood waste rankles somewhat... FWIW many years ago I did an IT consultancy job for a 'glue factory' in Slough and was amazed at what could be done using the appropriate chenicals to stick one improbable substrate to another. Now I understand xx years later. As it happens all the specialised stuff was made in Braunston (which amused me when we started canal boating). The next owner of the boat will have to make do with some gaping holes...
dmr
I know a couple of people who have worked for really posh kitchen makers, producing kitchens up to £100,000. I was amazed to find that even at this end of the market faced mdf is the norm. Both have now left and got jobs working with proper wood. ..................Dave
Jerra
They may be expensive but these claim to be solid Oak. https://www.solidwoodkitchencabinets.co.uk/door_only_type.html

My wrapped MDF doors lasted about 16 years and then they started to unwrap on just a few of the edges, the MDF didn't surprisingly fall apart. Replaced them with new ones from B&Q
blackrose
You say you tried ikea. Don't they supply solid wood kitchen cabinet doors anymore? My kitchen was from Ikea and the doors are all solid oak. Mind you, I fitted it 16 years ago so things may have gone downhill there.

Why should they get wetter on a narrowboat than in a house

Unfortunately no MDF reigns my previous kitchen was IKEA and real wood.

I can find no mention of solid wood and the video just shows chipboard being worked. I will be looking for doors in the not too distant future hence the interest. David Mack
Most of the suppliers I have looked in the past who claim to provide 'real wood' doors actually use real wood frames with a veneered mdf panel. There used to be a pine furniture shop near us where the chap made all the furniture himself, and used 9mm thick pine for the door panels. He told me he bought in the panel board (made from strips of pine glued together) from a supplier on the south coast - pine board that thin doesn't seem to be available from most local timber merchants. The cabinets they make may well be chipboard, but the shaker doors we had are solid wood, not sure if all are solid and you can order doors only as long as they are standard sizes. Jennifer McM
We bought a couple of extra B&Q cupboard doors to cannibalise so our carpenter could make a consistent job when he build the cupboards.
Tracy D'arth
I make all my own. Decent recycled timber from old furniture or flooring, planer, router, saw bench, biscuit jointer and sander. Use veneered ply for panels. Assemble flat on a bench with pva cramped together.
