Bank Newton closed

Bank Newton locks are currently closed 'until further notice'

CRT say they need to make "emergency repairs", but aren't going to start until Monday!

We are in Skipton, but are booked into Liverpool on 17th, it doesn't look like we'll make it.

Yes this isnt good news. Hopefully they can do a temp fix to the gate without needing a totally new gate? Or hopefully they have a new gate part way made at the workshop in readiness for the winter?? It was my only way back over the Pennines! The Wakefield branch of the A&C has a closure as does the R Trent??

We have been to the site this morning.  Hire boats are being  allowed through to get back to their base, but private boats are not being  allowed through.

That illustrates clearly where CRT's priorities lie !

We had considered turning round and going Leeds - Keadby - Nottingham -T&M.  Are you saying that isn't possible?

That is pretty frustrating if hire boats are being let through but not other boats with equally pressing needs, like getting to a new permanent mooring etc!? Any rumours from the staff on the ground as to whether it's days weeks or months to fix?

Gunthorpe lock on the Trent is shut currently but hopefully not a massive job to fix...?

There used to be a maintenance yard, capable of producing gates and all the other ancillary items needed, at Bank Newton, but unfortunately for those inconvenienced today it closed many years ago. Gone are the days when a major breach could be repaired in a few weeks, as happened on the canal above Keighley Golf Club in 1952.

The stoppage on the Aire & Calder reopened today for narrow boats.

Good news about Bank Newton, can't be fussed to copy the email but they are repairing it rather than replacing the gate so should be open end of the week hopefully??

Didn't fancy single handing back down to Leeds and over the Rochdale!

Yes open but sticking strictly to restricted hours. We arrived just after 5 having been told at Barnoldswick that we would be able to go through and the top lock was already padlocked. Didn't mind but slightly frustrating when the lockie emptied the full lock to let down water but wouldn't let us and the other waiting boat go down. Still it's a nice place to spend the night.

We went through in April and they were in a bad state then. Thankfully a lovely guy from the CRT helped us both ways,

Just past Bank Newton near to the TV mast on the 'weendy windys' as we call it is our favourite!!
