Caldwell Window Seals

Featured Posts

Thank you for reading

I am in the near future looking to replace the seals on my windows.

Take them out clean them up and replace ....

My question is what would be a fair thicknes for the seal, Midland are sugesting 12mm  wide  by 12mm depth  (Seems a lot)

Caldwells... Who made the windows are suggesting 16mm Wide but no depth suggestion.

Any guidlines here ?

Metal Hull / Caldwells hopper type windows

Thank you again for reading

Do you mean the seal between the window and the boat?

If you mean the actual seal in the window that the glass is in then I bought mine from Caldwell's so I knew it would fit.

If you mean the seal between the window and the steel then butyl tape is one way or something like THIS

Midlands offering will be the soft squidgy stuff that absorbs water

Hi @andybarrett1 how did you get on with the window sealing?

I also need to do this.  The windows were originally fixed using foam tape which failed after a few years.

I replaced with butyl tape, which eventually dried up (a few years later) and cracked!

As I've a lot of boat painting to do and need to remove the windows a couple of times, I'm thinking of going back to a tape.

Perhaps an EPDM tape like this one.

I just got the original tape from Caldwells .

I got to do one side ..... All looks OK so far

Only thing is as the tape settles I did have to nip the screws up very very slightly as i did get a little rain ingress the day after

All good now :-)

You need to use a tape that has a uniform thickness across its width, otherwise, the tape will hold water in the thinner areas and lead to paint degradation and then rust.
