Timings and moorings for Bingley 5-rise and 3-rise

I'm trying to work out where to stop either side of Bingley next month, IIRC there are no overnight moorings above the 5-rise, and the visitor moorings below the 3-rise are bleak and right next to the noisy main road -- is this correct?

The only decent mooring I can see on the Leeds side which sensibly lines up with the posted opening times is Saltaire/Ashley Lane (maybe the newer moorings between the Saltaire VM and Ashley Lane VM?), which is 1.5hrs away from the bottom of the 3-rise:

Up: in 10-11am -- out 11-12am, in 3-4pm -- out 4-5pm --  AM starting from Saltaire

Down: in 8-9am, out 9-10am, in 1-2pm -- out 2-3pm --  PM ending up at Saltaire

The timings seem a bit odd to be for both flights -- is this just the 5-rise?

Going down, after Saltaire I don't see any other decent moorings (don't fancy the Gallows Bridge VM in Shipley, canalplan is scathing...) until Apperley Bridge which is too far for the afternoon transit. Any other mooring suggestions in between Saltaire and Apperley Bridge?

We moored above the five rise overnight, lots of mooring space and went for a drink at the royal pub five to ten minutes walk, after the the three rise, is the fisherman pub, good food and lots of moorings, recommended stop at both. But particularly the fisherman.

Saltaire we moored just past the day time only moorings, you can’t get close into the side, but fine mooring, and went to boathouse pub on river Aire. Also options in town, nice interesting walk. It’s a great trip.

There are loads of moorings above the five, but you are correct about the moorings below the three being crap.  It makes trying to sleep on a motorway services seem luxurious!

Best stop before descending is probably the Marquis of Granby pub at Riddlesden, three swing bridges/20 minutes before the five rise, but mooring anywhere between Micklethwaite swing bridge and the top lock is fine if you don't need or want a pub.

The mooring not to miss is just after bridge 209 at Shipley, right outside Saltaire Brewery Tap.  Early starts are unlikely from here if you visit on a day between Thursday and Sunday ...

It looks fairly grim before 5pm because the road feeds an industrial estate, but the traffic disappears after hours, apart from one shift change later in the evening at one factory.

Gallows Bridge is a crap mooring but is right next to an Aldi, so most people use it as a shopping stop rather than overnight.

Firstly you can ignore the timings given on the CRT website - the lock keepers will get you through as and when you arrive. We have been up and three times in the last few weeks (and the boat 5 times) and the guys there explained that they will start at 8am with anyone wanting to go down and then will pickup anyone waiting to come up at 9 to 9.30. Then if you get to the bottom and there’s no one around just give the lockies a call (there’s a mobile number listed on the notice board) a d they will agree a time with you.

On moorings, if you’re going down and want the 8am timing you can moor on the lock landing overnight- we were encouraged to do just that. Of course you need to know if there’s space (there wasn’t much else every time we were there) so need to have a look in advance. There’s a useful water point by the ABC footbridge which is a 5 minute walk from the top.

there is shuttering just past the mills in Saltaire but as Timx says it’s hard to get properly in. We went on about 400yards to the 7 day VM on the offside which are not beautiful but do give easy access back to Salts Mill.

But TheBiscuits has it right - the best moorings are just after bridge 209 and close to Saltaire brewery - just keep away from the group of Canada geese a bit further up. We actually left our boat twice for a week there with no problems. There is even a sandwich van by the bridge most days for breakfast baps.

Thanks for the replies, everyone ?

I also moored at Gallows Bridge last time on the L&L to go to Aldi, and I would't want to stay there overnight.

We also stopped at Saltaire Brewery to pick up "supplies" (surprise, surprise!), hadn't though of stopping there overnight -- anyway we won't get there until well after they close at 4:30, and we'd have to leave at before they open at 8:30 to get to Bingley in time to go up in the morning. Might call on the way back though -- and probably in the car on the way to pick the boat up to stock up... ?

Saltaire at the new rings is where we are currently aiming for (timing permitting), between the (non-overnight) Saltaire VM and the (small) Ashley Lane VM.

Moored at The Fisherman last time too (in the pouring rain) only to find it was closed for refurbishment/new owners and due to reopen the following day -- how unlucky can you get? They were very friendly when we passed them early morning on the way back a couple of days later, we'd just run out of water (yes, I know...) and they let us run a hose into their scullery to fill up. Might be a bit far to get to on the first day, depends what time we get away from Apperly Bridge.

I seem to remember it was wall-to-wall boats with nowhere to moor above the 5-rise last time we were there, has this changed, did I miss some moorings, or is it just a case of tacking onto the end of the (long) line of boats however far that goes?

Above the 5-rise is less of a problem anyway, we've got a long half-day either way after coming up in the morning and before going down in the afternoon, so maybe aim for Kildwick but it seems the White Lion is permanently closed -- What Pub says they're not and when I try ringing them the number seems to be unobtainable.

Or maybe Bradley -- the Slater's Arms is lovely but an extra 1.5hrs might be a bit of a push to get there...

The White Lion is definitely shut and barded - we got stuck when the Warehouse swing bridge failed a couple of weeks ago and went to look. We were told by some locals that it was run as a tenancy by a company who have said they are not coming back. I guess it's more likely to never reopen.

Are you in the marina at Apperley Bridge Ian? We just put our boat in there on Friday for 2 weeks.

Thanks John, that's really helpful. I'm also hoping that since we're starting from Apperley Bridge on a Saturday there won't be many hire boats going through at the same times we are, most of the boatyards are above Bingley so will be coming down early/midweek and up late/midweek, we'll be going up on Sunday and down on Thursday against the traffic.

Might change the plan going up and aim for the Fisherman's then, assuming we get away in time. Or Saltaire Brewery if we don't, it all depends on how quickly Bear turn the boat round -- but at least we've got three options, knowing Bingley timing isn't so crucial ?

Thought so about the White Lion, the local Camra newslettter confirms what you said. Shame, I have fond memories of drinking a lot of Landlord there after some excellent fish and chips from just up the road, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Mind you, that was more than thirty years ago... ?

We're hiring from Bear Boats at the marina -- heven't used them before but they look like *very* nice boats, looking forward to it ?

Ian - you will find the canal very quiet altogether until you get to Silsden. The vast majority of hire boats from Silsden, Snaygill and Pennine cruisers go the other way up through Gargrave. The lockie at Bank Newton told us that many of those boats are hired out twice a week for 3 and 4 nights, so he often sees the same boats four times a week.

At Bingley we only went through with another boat once out of three trips and on none of the trips was there anything else moving. You could easily go from the marina to Bingley without seeing another boat moving.

On Friday at the marina there was a Bear boat pretty much ready to go out when we were there around 11.30.

Thats a real shame, we really liked that pub and used to stay B&B before our boating days.

The hours on Google are for the brewery offices.  The Tap is 12 till 8? Thursday to Sunday.

Close - it’s 12-9 Thursday to Saturday and 12-6 Sunday. We managed to miss it open every time recently.

Oh dear. I have a horrible feeling we might have to moor there... ?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just saw today on Facebook that there's no food at the Fishermans for the time being because their chef has done a bunk... ?

"So, we want the kitchen open as much as you do!! Unfortunately last minute our chef has let us down ? does anybody know a chef that needs a job? If so please apply within! Give me a message or a phone call and we can arrange an interview! Hopefully we will get this kitchen open sooner rather than later ? thank you all for your patience ?"

Is there anywhere to moor at Silsden? Nothing obvious from books/maps/canalplan, how about west of Silsden Narrows after all the boatyard moorings?

silsden.JPG

Yes. At the end of the row of houses towards the bottom of this pic (have a look at this view again but move West) - there are some stables plus a small field. Very acceptable mooring if you don't mind slumming it a bit ?.

There is a long bit of nice armco above the Dowley Gap 2 rise which is where we stayed the night before going up Bingley 3 and 5 rise. It's only about 20-30 minutes cruise from their to the bottom of Bingley 3 rise and isn't near the road.

And yes Silsden has lots of moorings on armco again, around the bend east of the main road bridge. Wasn't that busy at all compared to how hectic Skipton is! And seems a lovely village!

Planning to stop near the Fishermans, I assume that's where you mean?

So, just when everything looked good...

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/20043-bridge-198a-morton-swing-bridge-leeds-and-liverpool-canal

"The bridge will be unavailable on Thursday 8th July 2021 between 10:00 and 14:30 due to the planned works."

Since opening times to go down Bingley (less than an hour away) are officially 8am-9am and 1pm-2pm, this makes passage impossible if you stop before the bridge the night before -- say, for example, at Silsden (2.5 hours away) on Wednesday 7th... ?

Assuming that "unavailable" means "closed to boats" -- does anyone have any idea whether this is what it means?

Yes! But don't try to stop too near as the moorings are west of the pub, there isn't much space right outside it or between the pub and Dowley Gap locks.

The clue is in the text. "Powercut" = ain't gonna work/swing.

I got that. But fixed closed (canal blocked, no passage) or open (road blocked, alternatives available)?
