Large fire at Platts Eylot

That is a lot of history gone. Our family has had a boat moored on that island from 1966 through to 2009 so know it very well. Spent one day there when there was a local historic group and ex Thorneycroft workers who showed you around and described the place. Not the first time that there has been a fire on the island and developers have been after putting houses and a leisure complex on there for years

Are you suggesting a link ?

Just saying it like it is. Taggs island which had a casino on and is just downstream burnt down many years ago. Developers were after that but the island had a gypsy curse on it and was eventually sold to the houseboat owners who moor there and they put a lagoon  on it for more house boats. I have seen the developers model for Platts eyot. Those sheds that have burnt down were on Richmond councils list of historic buildings but the owners did not have to maintain them to a standard which was weird.

Now if this was in the political section I could easily give a reason for that.

Bloody shame re Lady Gay.

It is a shame but not a surprise to me. The fire brigade did an exercise on the top of the island when we moored there. I happened to bump into a fire man who asked me to show him the dry riser pipework around the island and he was not happy about it. I left him walking around as I had to go in the marina office and was in there when the fireman walked past. The office staff had a fit and said he should not be there and was only to be at the top of the island

It's amazing that the boats in the foreground don't look to have been gutted by fire too.

Ditto. I would be amazed if they haven't suffered some sort of heat damage. I was imagining they moored there after the fire but then why would anybody do that?

Maybe the wind that blew the reported rubbish fire was blowing across those boats to the island. It is the boats on the far side that were destroyed.

Unbelievable that someone thought a bonfire was a good idea in those winds.....I wonder what the insurance company will think of that....although any developers might now be very happy if one was to be cynical!

?  ?  ?  ?

Outdated racist stereotyping, or just superstitious ignorance?

Neither , it had a gypsy curse on it that stated that anyone who owned the island went bankrupt. I think someone even paid some gypsy to come and uncurse the island. They turned up in a Rolls Royce.

Gypsy curses are traditionally very strong, and feared.

Gypsy is valid......pikey, irish traveller scum etc, are not.

Ask any Birmingham City supporter about the gypsy curse on St. Andrews (Trillion Trophy Stadium now). When Barry Fry was manager, he employed a gypsy to lift it, but if he succeeded there, it was soon undone by a succession of very dubious billionaire Hong Kong hairdressers and various other racist stereotyped oriental owners.

What about Gippo? ?

Seriously, what's wrong with Irish traveller?

Gypsy curses are also traditionally considered to be a load of nonsense. It really depends on the superstitious beliefs or otherwise of the people you're talking to.

My better half has been “Gypsy cursed” many times in her youth when working as a supervisor at fruit picking time. Told she’d not live to see the morning, usually when rejecting punnets with stones in the bottom to make up weight or very unripe fruit to do the same.
