Rob-M
Met a chap at Common Lock who was flying his drone and took some footage for us. Couple of stills below, I'll upload the video when I get home.

Oddjob
On the GU in the pound between locks waiting for lock to empty guy on the bridge flying his drone and all I heard was bussing the splash it missed the boat by a couple of feet and me by about 5 feet. It went down like HMS Hood never to be seen again. Owner stomped off in a huff as no doubt serious money just gone swimming.
IanM
Having just got a drone licence myself I’m surprised that anyone would attempt to fly one near boats they’re not involved with as you’re meant to stay at least 50m away from people unless they’re with you. Even one of the questions in the test was about whether you could fly one over a holiday cottage when there was people who you didn’t know inside. The answer to that one was you couldn’t. The code mentions bylaws in places like parks but not much else. It’s more to do with privacy so no flying over people you don’t know, no flying over residential areas and buildings, that sort of thing. The 50m away from people extends to the max height you can fly which is 120m. Also if you’re flying at 80m then you have to keep 80m away from people and so on. bizzard
Talking of Drones, there are drone bee's too that buzz around guarding the workers. Serious drones are used by the military. The USAF are using 2 at the mo Forte 10 and 11 seem to be based near Syracuse in the Med. Jet powered, big as a fighter plane and 32 hour duration in the air. They've been sending them off to all over Russia, mainly Ukraine area because of the big military Russian build up on the borders there, also lots of RAF, Nato and USAF aircraft frequently buzzing around the Black Sea, Crimea area, keeping there distance, These can be seen from time to time on Flightradar24. The drones fly at about 53,000 ft. Very likely a lot of Nato, British and American and whatnot warships knocking about around there too. Putin is dangerous. Nope! Drones have one purpose in life and that is to mate with the virgin queen, the rest of the time they do as little as possible and certainly nothing as strenuous as guard duty. You are quite right. Unfortunately most amateur drone flyers seem to disregard the rules, and are egged on by lots of people including on here. But of course if anything goes wrong they will be in deep shit. And also of course a governments typical response to widespread ignoring of laws is to tighten those laws, so even the law-abiding folk suffer. The code is here https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly The code also mentions not flying over recreational areas. This of course comes from the law, which prohibits flight over congested areas. A congested area is defined (amongst other things) as an area used primarily for leisure and recreation. It would seem hard to explain in court why a canal and towpath is not an area used primarily for recreation.
pig
There are significant differences in the rules for drones of less than 250gms. The drone code quoted above states: Small drones and model aircraft: below 250g, C0 or C1 class The rule on minimum distances to people is different when flying small drones and model aircraft that are below 250g, or in C0 or C1 class. If you’re flying a drone or model aircraft that’s lighter than 250g or is C0 class, you can fly closer to people than 50m and you can fly over them. The chap flying the drone seemed to be flying it over the fields away from the canal but obviously could film us on the canal but not detailed enough to identify us. I never heard the drone until he started bringing it back in to land.

You also have to install the CAA app Drone Assist on your phone, it indicates flying area restrictions such as around airports & military bases. JonesBoy
Some of the laws that are being quoted do not apply to drones under 250g other than to fly safely. The UK Civil Aviation Authority Small drones and model aircraft: below 250g, C0 or C1 class You can fly small drones and model aircraft that are lighter than 250g, or C0 or C1 class, in residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas.
