No it won't affect the bleeding but it is likely to affect the reliability. The CAV manual for fuel systems shows a return from the leak off pipe pipe to tank via the top of the filter. I explained this to you only last week. If you can guarantee all joints in the fuel system, including filter seals and gaskets, will be 100% airtight when under suction, the needle seats in the injectors are 100% gas tight under external pressure AND there is no dissolved air in the fuel then I am sure you will get away without the bleed back to the tank from the top of the filter but for how long is very much open to question. every 1.5 and 1.8 I have seen has such a return.

Thanks Tony, the thing I've having trouble with at present is finding an elongated bolt to fit through the 2 way banjo on the top of the CAV, (The bleed bolt), No real luck on the internet, so will probably have to go across town to the local fuel filter and hydraulics specialist I got to do the new gearbox hoses.

Take the filter with you because I think there is a difference in threads and diameters. As you seem to want to use flexible hose they might be able to supply a single banjo with two hose tails.

If the banjo bolt is for a 10mm banjo then the Delphi part number for the longer bolt might be 7111-135A BUT it is only 3mm longer that the shorter ones so I suspect that is not the one you need. From memory the longer one is about half as long again as the short single banjo one.

Have you had a look here: https://www.darwendiesels.com/70-banjo-bolts

but you will need to know the bolt diameter and the thread size and form in the filter. They also seem to have an extensive selection of banjos with two hose/pipe connections that may save needing a long bolt.

Great info from Tony, and this is the inline vent banjo bolt for a CAV 296:

Search - Darwen Diesels Ltd

That bolt is just a longer version of the normal one, and costs 4.55 quid including VAT and postage. Darwin Diesels seem to be a very good but fairly cheap company who post most parts first class the same day.
