I think you meant "Sailing". "Sailing By" is a Ronald Binge classic which some of our older members will remember as the theme music for the late night BBC shipping forecast.

A beautiful piece of of music that makes me picture a sailing tall ship.  An excellent piece to play loudly through Harecastle or Standedge tunnels.

Brings back happy memories of night passages across the English Channel.

I suspect that our oxidised friend was well aware of that.Talented chap, that Binge: he also composed the equally lovely 'Elizabethan Serenade'.

I do hope that Rod doesn't sit on his boat calling out "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" to passing teenagers.

With luck he will retire aboard and stop singing.

He is one of a very few ‘aged’ pop stars of the distant past that doesn’t carry on regardless. He has diversified his music style to fit his changing ability. So unlike Roger D of the who.

To add, I’m not a fan of Mr Stewarts.

Went to see him the other year, it was an exceptional performance which Jayne and I really enjoyed

I'm beginning to suspect that this may not be the real Rod Stewart.

I beg to disagree, he loves to have a laugh, had a right good crack at Bloomfield road in 2014 taking the mick out of the Oystons whilst they emptied the cash only tills.!!

I would lean on the side of, yes, its 'I'm.

Hi Rod.

Howzit going? Remember that time we met in the little bakery in Sunningdale, back in 1979? You'd blocked me in with your rather tasteful gold Rolls Royce and I asked you to move it to let me out. Which you did, and you were very gracious about it. I expect you were a bit star-struck, bumping into me so unexepectedly like that.

Also Cornet Carrillon, and the lovely Oboe solo The Watermill.

I agree, a very talented bloke.

I was a bit surprised when I opened the present Santa Penny left beneath my tree this year to find that the packaging  had Pfizer/victron marked on it.

I found that due to the orientation of the little blue box, the charge controller was much harder to install than normal, but after leaving it for  a good thirty minutes, my battery was 40% longer and easier to discharge.Vtron.jpg.f3895694607e7f285675d9a8a43dfb27.jpg

I'm thinking of adding the viagratron galvanic isolator next to protect me from STDs, but I am a bit reluctant to install their inverter. Honestly, it just sounds like it's asking for trouble having such a thing on a boat what I am sailing.

I'm off to play with my train set now and install my new Viagratron smart shunt. I believe this will allow me to arrange my rolling stock twice as fast as when I was younger.

Finally, you will be sad to hear that due to a leak, I have had to start writing new lyrics for one of my songs. Unfortunately, after too much Christmas cheer, I am stuck for words, but have made a start.......

I am bailing, I am bailing
Oily water, from my sump
I am bailing, no longer sailing
Wish I'd got a viagratron pump.

Never shoulda, got inverter
Now my bots upside doon
If I can't get her upright
Me and Pen, gonna drown.

Happy New Year to all you little people. Yes I know I'm only 5 foot 2, but have a huge heart. I'm hoping for some Viagratron cuban heel, blue suede shoes next Christmas to elevate the situation.

Rod x

Is this your first draft of books to come.🤣 more  please 👍

"Sailing By"  is still played on Radio 4 just before  00.45 every night to introduce the shipping forecast. The music always finishes at the same time so that the forecast can always start at the same time,  so if the "Book At Bedtime" which normally precedes it over-runs, the start of the music gets cut off.  Not sure how much longer the shipping forecast will last as the BBC are closing their long wave transmitter in March, after which the alternative Radio 4 long wave programmes like "The Daily Service" and "Yesterday/ Today In Parliament" are migrating to the digital channel BBC Extra.

Rumour has it that Rod has given up singing in 2024 to spend more time with his trains and pursue his much loved passion of painting.

Apparently he loves painting casseroles.
