Hopefully we won't be there. It could be the end of the old part of the aqueduct if it goes with the top gate open.

Remember C&RT blamed the previous breach on vandals opening all the paddles on Stanthorne, a wide open lock at both ends would be far worse.

It would shut again pretty quickly!

Yeah, very annoying as I was booked into the dock later this month.

I'm not sure they have drained the pound yet as nobody has posted photos of it.

Just saw an update that this has been put back from 15th April.

Update on 14/04/2021:

Please be advised these works have been postponed. Navigation will no longer be closed between Lock 86 and Lock 87 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal tomorrow, Thursday 15 April. Notice of the rescheduled works will be provided as soon as able.

Original message:

Please be advised, a navigation closure is required on Thursday 15 April between Lock 86 and Lock 87 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to ensure the safety of a dive team who will be in the canal to carry out repair works to the Wigan Dry Dock.

We anticipate navigation will resume by 5pm.

The update today, no surprise that there is more work required than just rehanging one gate.

Notice Alert

Middlewich Branch (Shrop Union)
Location: Lock 2, Stanthorne Lock, Middlewich Branch, Shropshire Union Canal
Starts At: Lock 2, Stanthorne Lock
Ends At: Lock 2, Stanthorne Lock

Monday 19 April 2021 08:00 until further notice

Type: Navigation Closure
Reason: Repair

Update on 27/04/2021:

We have successfully removed the lock gate at Lock 2, Stanthorne Lock on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal and our contractors have measured and manufactured the steel work required to make the repair and are back onsite today to install the framework.

On removing the lock gate, our teams found further damage and are now working hard on its repair. We are aiming to reinstall the lock gate by Wednesday 28 April. Following its installation, our team will then reinstall the balance beam and carry out essential repairs to the lock, including the lock ladder.

We are working with our contractors to be ready to remove the scaffolding and fabric dams as soon as it is safe to do so, subject to this, we anticipate navigation will re-open by 5pm, Friday 30 April.

A further update will be provided by Thursday 29 April.

Any idea what actually happened to need to replace the ladder as well

The tops of the ladder have been bent over, due to presumably a rope being tied to it, for a year or more. Previously repaired with yellow aware tape which has failed to bend it straight again, not surprisingly.

It will be interesting to see how well this repaired gate works next time I pass by. It has not been in good fettle for many years.

Couldn't someone have been getting on with the ladder whilst the rest was being done?

That would have been the efficient use of manpower and involve a management decision, both an anathema  to C&RT

Methinks the problems lie in the difference between using inhouse resources and contractors.

For the former a 'chat' between the various teams / departments can get a fix with the minimum of approvales etc

For the latter, I suspect official authorisations, time calculations / costings / whatever - all of which takes time....

No. Efficiency is achieved by division of labour. Gate people do gates. Ladder people do ladders. Balace beam people do balance beams. Board members do bonuses. See?

I suspect that Covid distancing rules would mean that a lot of things CRT need to do weren't actually possible.

That may be so for Joe Public, but I think most business of a similar type are continuing to employ people and do work, men working in pairs etc etc.

Way back in March 2000, the CRT were sending out teams of three grasscutters/maintenance, but each had a van and a grasscutter.

I see Stanthorne is reopening tomorrow lunchtime.

They seem to have done quite well, remains to be seen if it now works and how long for.    I don't suppose they have cut off the stupid rack stops off the gate paddles. They are to prevent "vandals" fully opening the paddles and washing away the concrete downstream channel over the river. As If.

Reminds me of when we had to have the gas pipe coming into our house repaired. Gasman#1 found the leak, gasman#2 dug the hole, gasman#3 replaced the pipe, gasman#4 reconnected it to the meter inside the house and turned the gas on, gasman#5 filled the hole in, gasman#6 re-concreted the drive, Gasman#7 fixed the damage to the rendering on the outside of the house. Seven visits from the same organisation for one job. Not even Flanders and Swann saw that coming... ?
