"Today on the Macclesfield canal, I phoned crt to get an update this morning but they don't have one , so I walked down to talked to the people that came yesterday to doing the work and they have explained to me what they need to do to fix the leaking pipe that runs underneath the canal and how long they reckon it will take to do, and they think it will take 4 to 6 weeks to do the work, they have to take trees down take a wall down to get to the side of the canal and then put 200 tones of stone ether side of the pipe so there machine can across the canal to dig out the damaged pipe and replace it, but he did say the pipe was repaired 18 months ago by crt, back then all crt did was put a concrete saddle over the top of the old broken pipe to seal the hole, but they should have put a concrete saddle all the way around the pipe to spread the weight out , so now the old pipe has collapsed underneath the concrete saddle, so we are here for 4 to 6 weeks, I did see someone on Facebook last night saying that they thought crt were going to dig a channel through the land slip at Bridge 200 near  Anderton boat lift to allow boats through, I asked crt this morning if this was so and all they said was we will be giving an update on the landslip at Anderton on the 20/4/2021 till then they can't comment, so if anyone one out there hears anything please let us all know!!"

Starting tomorrow, our contractors will be onsite between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal to undertake works that will help us to explore ways in which we can safely allow boat movement through the affected area without destabilising the embankment, slipped material within the canal or the above gas main.

A further update will be provided by Tuesday 20 April.

Update on 07/04/2021:

Investigations are now complete between Bridge 38, Black Road Bridge and Bridge 39, Hollands Bridge on the Macclesfield Canal and our teams have found the culvert has failed and requires replacement.

Our contractors have already started onsite carrying out a fish rescue and removing a third party owned wall to allow access to the site.

Over the next coming weeks, we will be establishing a safe, controlled working environment to create a dry working area and managing water flows by installing pumps over the culvert to be able to remove the existing culvert.

Our contractors have committed to working seven days a week to be able to re-open navigation as soon as safely possible. Whilst there is a considerable amount of work that is required for navigation to resume, we anticipate works will be complete by the end of June.

Your nearest water points are:

Downstream - Bosley Services

Upstream - Near to Bridge 15, Brownhills Bridge

A further update on progress onsite will be provided Wednesday 5 May.

Marvellous. Every time I go out on the boat now, I wonder if I'll get home again. The four counties ring is going to be busy as none of the hire boats can go anywhere else.

At least you are south of the breach Arthur.

What's the problem on the L&L near Wigan that the Foxes Afloat boys refer too, Big Leak??

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/19377-lock-86-wigan-leeds-and-liverpool-canal

Please be advised navigation will be closed between Lock 86 and Lock 87 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to inspect a severe leak at Wigan Dry Dock.

Our local team will be draining the pound to inspect the issue and organise a method of repair.

An update will be provided by Thursday, 8 April.

For clarity, the leak is through the gates on the dry dock - it's only a navigation stoppage while they have a look at the issue, as it's not a big pound so it's easiest to just drop the level to investigate.  Hopefully they'll be putting stop planks or a portadam in place to do the actual work.

Still many routes available which only involve partial use of the four counties ring route.

Wait until Monday and there will be more open.

Loads of boats out, lots of lovely unmaintained lock mechanisms, still a stack of broken paddles from earlier years, hardly any maintenance done as everyone's been furloughed. It's going to be an interesting year out there.

You missed out CRT not taking seasonal staff on this year so less available bodies to fix stuff anyway.

There are quite a few non-stoppage maintenance jobs on the go currently though.  We had to wait for a workboat to move to get through a lock when shifting a boat last week, they were replacing a lock ladder that's been missing for many years.

Cynics might think they are fixing easy bits to get more of the infrastructure in good condition ahead of the DEFRA review ...

This is exactly what I am thinking. The last 12 months provided CRT a perfect opportunity to get on top of maintenance with very little activity on the waterways. I hope I am wrong, but I suspect the next couple of weeks are going to result in multiple stoppages as the system is suddenly populated with owners and hirers out boating again on the clapped out infrastructure.

I suspect that Covid distancing rules would mean that a lot of things CRT need to do weren't actually possible.

Could you elaborate please? There are not many canals with no stoppages on them now.

Shropshire Union from Barbridge to Autherley Junction and return, Llangollen, north and south Staffs and Worcs, Birmingham Canals, Trent and Mersey south of Anderton, Coventry, Caldon, Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canals.

All available cruising routes without having to do the Four Counties ring just because the Cheshire ring isn't an option.

Out and back journeys can be better for queue management at locks too, as 'ring' routes might mean locks are more overcrowded in a particular direction if the majority of boats go the same way around.

. . . and those projects they did tackle took longer because of all the workarounds.

Stanthorne bottom off side gate is bowed out by about 6", split and pouring water through, no longer fits the sill so water going under as well. So bent that the paddle is jammed.

Leaks are so bad that the top ground paddles are failing to fill the lock. I suspect that the towpath side paddle is blocked.

Been bad for nigh on 3 years but now its near total failure.

I went through last week and it was bad, bad, bad.

What's up with it?

One of the bottom gates is bulged in a way no lock gate should ever be. You need to shut the gates on a specific order to get them to close at all.

At least that was the state of play last Autumn. I can't believe CRT have done nothing about it.

Other problems noticed recently. There's a landslip at the  North end of Shrewley tunnel which is slowly but steadily filling in the canal. (There are a couple of landslips in the cutting North of there too: the obstructions used to be marked by hazard tape but they've been there so long the tape has degraded and gone, but we still bounce over the deposited material.) The free board is so low in a few places either side of Preston Baggot on the South Stratford that the water is running away over the towpath. Some have been patched with sandbags, one has a rather fetching little dam of sticks and stones that's added to by passing children, like a cairn. There's also a substantial leak out under the towpath South of Lowsonford. One of the bottom gates in Braunston flight has substantial movement between the failed frame and the boarding when it's opened and closed. If that lasts a season I'll eat my hat.,
