Blimey... behave yourselves folks ??

Quote

“Some are disgruntled, others muttering along the lines of ‘haven't they heard of the Littleport Riots?’”.

(The riots took place in 1816 over unemployment and demands for a minimum wage: rioters were rounded up, five were hanged).

Some fathead on the County Council has said that the race must take place "behind closed doors". Er, have they ever seen a boat race?

Yeah - it's a figure of speech innit; an aligator (as in cauliflower).

Never mind made I larf (must get out a bit more roll on 10th. April or thereabouts)

Are there any lucid explanations as to why the race has to go on?

Are there any lucid explanations as to why it shouldn't? Many major sporting events, such as soccer and rugby, have been "going on" in this country of late.

Haven't got the notice from the EA but seem to recall the moorings are closed for a week before and a week after.

Yes, that's correct.  from now until 9th April. I hope to investigate in the next few days.

Is there anything to stop boats positioning themselves at the mouth of the Lark? 2 or 3 abreast.

A boom.

Good to see that both Oxford and Cambridge have made it through to the final again ?

That also happened in 1944, the last time the race was here (hence the name of the moorings on this stretch: Diamond 44, created 60 years later). The umpire followed on horseback.

What an utterly captivating bit of film.

A BBC news item.  Not sure I quite agree with the "quiet backwater" bit.  The water level can be a little bit tidal in Ely, if there is lots of fresh water flow. The level peaks about five hours of HW Kings Lynn - due to the operation of Denver Sluice.
