Haulage estimates - moving NB from one part of England to another

Hi all,

If anyone has used a haulage company to move their narrowboat from one part of the country to another, are you able to let me know the rough cost? Trying to get an idea of costs so I can factor that in when weighing up if it's worth purchasing a boat from far away to where I want to be living on it.

Thanks!

If it is the perfect boat for you then it is worth the cost of moving it by road. Or move it by canal

Definitely! I just want to understand the rough costs so I can anticipate and budget :)

I've messaged a couple of moving companies but am interested to see people's personal experiences too.

There will be a heck of a difference between (say) London & Bristol, London to Northampton and Plymouth to Inverness.

You will be looking at £160-£300 at each end for lift out and lift in, PLUS £1000 (if its a one day job) to £xxxxxx if its a multiday job. A part day cost will be little different to a full day as the driver will be on limited hours and will be unlkely to be able to do another job after your 4 or 5 hour job.

Work on the truck doing about 200 miles in a day (including lift on and lift off)

I paid £2250 (+ hoist both ends) but it was a 2-day trip and a widebeam and needed escort vehicle and 'night-out surcharge' for both truck driver and escort vehicle driver.

The problem the OP has is that he hasn't identified a boat and doesn't know where it will be coming from.

It is not 'nice' to ask companies to waste time estimating ficticious journeys.

I think he has had enough replies to get an idea that (wirh cranage) it will be £2k-£3k pretty much from anywhere.

If 'a couple of grand' is going to put him off buying the boat he wants, maybe he'll need to reconsider a boating life as that will be just the 1st of many unwanted costs.

I cannot believe for a second that asking for a quote for a 'fictitious' journey would upset the like of Ray from Bargemovers, he could probably give you a realistic cost off the top of his head.
