Llangollen ground paddle

The second lock down at Hurleston has an intriguing 'swan-neck' old ground paddle and the only example of old paddle gear left on this canal. It is fully up in about 3 turns. Does anyone remember other examples like this on the Llangollen from many years ago? I know the second Baddiley lock also had one like this but it was replaced with a modern thing probably only within the last 30 years - does anyone remember the example at Baddiley or elsewhere? Did the old ground paddles disappear at the same time as the gate paddles being removed?

The paddle at Hurleston used to be fitted with a chain and peg to fit between the rack and pinion to hold the paddle up, but for some reason this was replaced with a standard pawl, again does anyone know of other locks where this chain and peg system still survives?

The Montgomery had a number of them, especially south of Berriew, some found their way onto the Stratford Canal, allegedly conveyed in camouflage vans in the dead of night...

I'm guessing they were an SU innovation, they allow for the situation where the paddle shutter and rod is at the edge of the coping whilst allowing the operator to be side on to the canal rather than facing it.

If the paddle rod and shutter is set back, such elegance is not needed, as the paddle post can be directly over the rod
