ENGINE OIL - Where can I dispose of used engine oil safely???

It was probably OK to do that years ago when oil had few if any additive so microbes etc. could deal with it but I would hate to do it today with all the additives in the oil, ordinary folk have no idea what they are.

In the past it might have been tolerated or even considered normal to pollute the environment but I don't think it was ever okay .
