Where should I place my WiFi router?

I've never given it any consideration,  although mine has always been in the lounge, which is at the front of the boat. I'd try it whetever it suits you, and only consider location if it doesn't work well enough for you.

Which router did you buy? and did you buy an external aerial?

If its a steel boat being close to a window is best because the steel of the boat stops the radio signals getting inside the boat.  that is why many use an external aerial.

If there is a steel bulkhead between engine and router the much air bourne interference won't get through.  Wiring bound interference might. In any case the only thing on a diesel that causes interference is the alternator and many are fitted with a blade to fit a suppressor but if they work for 4 or 5 G signals I have no idea.
