Windows advice

Hi all, here hoping everyone is surviving bloody covid. Quick question I need 8 new windows for my 36ft springer as the originals are shot. I have refurbed them but they are still really leaky. I have seen plastic pvc windows, similar to household double glazed units and these are alot cheaper than hoppers that are single glazed. Any thoughts/experience with these please looking for a bit of advice really.

Narowboat windows open inwards for a reason - narrow locks and walking down the gunwale. Domestic windows tend to open outwards.

PVC windows tend to be screwed through the frame in the same plain as the glass. boat windows tend to be fitted with the screws at right angles to the glass.

Plus they look horrible to many eyes but if its all you can afford and have a way of fixing them and sealing them to the cabin side ...........

Are you sure you know where the windows are leaking. most don't leak between glass and frame but between frame and cabin side.  Rust under the frame will keep pushing the frame away from the cabin side

Thanks. As is typical of Ebay etc. not enough information to see if they open inwards or outwards. Also Vulcan Boat Windows as listed don't seem to have a website but Vulcan windows do but it seem to be an installation company so I can't  comment further.

Edited to add - you need to find out the dimensions of the frame. Domestic windows are often 3" plus thick which will protrude at least 2" into the cabin. No vital dimensions or diagrams on Ebay.

Leaky windows...... Groan!

My last three boats had window leaks, but with a fair bit of work, were re-sealed.

The frame must be removed and rust  sanded off from the cabin and painted. The frame to cabin sealed with non setting mastic or mastic tape ( do not use silicon or Acriflex) The frame needs to be dismantled to remove the glass and new rubber seals obtained from somewhere like Seals Direct.

The worst part of the job,is dismantling the frame to remove the glass, some will have corroded metal corner pieces holding the frame together and mine were absolute pigs to dismantle.

However it will be much cheaper than spending £170 per window.
