They appear to have done a very tidy job.

All power to them.

Agreed - but I wonder how they did all that within their £40k budget - especially given that we have been told that it will cost around £20k to repaint 'Alnwick' . . .

Ah, Graham, there is paint and paint. You know what a really good long lasting job will cost, some just want a coat of paint. Still £20K is a lot, I would not live long enough to justify that level of expenditure.

Was it a new hull or a second hand one they referbished

The article says they had the shell built for them

'We love to travel to new places, so a narrowboat seemed like the perfect idea. We had the boat built from scratch so we could design where we wanted everything such as the windows.

'Within the first month of receiving the boat, we had the windows in, the batons and ballast completed, the spray foam insulation installed and at this point, we moved in.

New shell, second hand engine, largely scrounged and second hand materials for the fitout, and a lot of work by them - apparently living on board throughout.

An interesting and quirky interior (although I would have put a proper edging to the cabin lining around the windows).

Shows that you don't need the £100,000+ budget of some others on the forum.

That's a ridiculous quote, unless it includes Zynga and 2 pack underneath....even then, still overpriced.

Much heartened - I am looking for alternative quotes although as mentioned in another topic we are looking for grit-blasting the old finish away followed by two-pack primer.

That is a very high quote. Try John Sanderson at Dadfords Wharf, he charged me £5000 plus a couple of hundred for signwriting, for Helvetia six years ago and that included removing all windows and fittings etc. and taking back to bare metal.   https://www.narrowboatpainting.co.uk/

I just picked up on this line "

  • Instead they spent £42,000 buying and renovating a 55ft houseboat
