Not needed for a 65' boat in a 72' lock, all but 2 uphill.

Huh?  The boat is 2 feet narrower than the canal was built to take!  There aren't many places other than bridgeholes and locks where you couldn't get three abreast at that width.

The L&L from the Bridgewater to Liverpool is generally a good wide deep canal, as is the Bridgewater, and there are no seriously leaky locks (at least last time we did it) so it should be fine.
