my point is, when you're on a mouseless device that you can't hover with and are faced with an acronym with multiple possibilities the feature becomes redundant.

perhaps i'm just used to looking at things and thinking how would someone with no clue view it, comes from years of writing idiot-style guides to things

I think the point is that people will use these acronyms anyway - I regularly use RCHS and SCCS, both have other options but in a canal context these are few

That said, the late Charles Hadfield admitted once that, when taking notes he had used the reference W&B, and a year later he realised there are three canals with these initials and he didn't know which one he'd been making notes on!

But for 2 of them the B is the same!?

All I do is to move the cursor over the abbreviation, don't click anything and after a very short time, the word appears

Even on this, hover above Nb in all 4 cases, Narrowboat shows.

Nope, nothing happening.

Edited to say that after I typed that, I tried again and now it works!    Actually, I'm not sure I want these things popping up - I managed quite well with acronyms in context before.   Can I turn it off, or is that just being awkward? ?

IWA - Inland Waterways Association

RCHS - Railway and Canal Historical Society

FMC - Fellows, Morton and Clayton

WI - Waterways Ireland

EA - Environment Agency

TLA - Three letter acronym ;)

Confusion is possible, I had a brief but engaging correspondence with the treasurer of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society due to a minor error in an email address

Thanks, please keep them coming.

That may be true but unfortunately we cannot possibly please or cater for everyone but that's not to say we won't do what we can with the best of intentions.

Thanks. Will miss out BT though due to it commonly being used to refer to British Telecom. Any that are likely to be misconstrued are probably best left out.

Surely any that are likely to be misconstrued should be in there.   Somebody reads a post mentioning the use of the BT in maneuvering and thinks what the blank blank blank has British Telecom to do with maneuvering.   Mouse over and discover there are things called Bow Thrusters.

Does that include NBTA which can have a multitude of meanings?

Also H N B C = Historic Narrow Boat Club.

Unfortunately the forum system is not clever enough to consider context. If we run a search on "BT", (link below) you will see there is approx. a 60/40 split between the acronym being commonly used to describe Bow Thruster and similarly British Telecom.

But what are the odds of someone joining CWDF to discuss the National Baton Twirling Association?
