divert the path round it. If and when someone says no ask why not and expect proper reasoning, not just it wont be close to the water.

A walker could still use the original line of the path if they didn't mind wet feet/legs.  I suspect most of them would prefer to walk on the dry bit though.

I think they have to be no more than 1 in 12 which IIRC is about 5°  (for wheelchairs that is).

so (roughly) a foot long for every inch rise...

That could easily be a sixty foot ramp (each side) - no wonder it's expensive!

Assuming it has to be a fixed bridge but would a swing bridge or lift bridge not suffice.

I wonder what a reasonable incline is; it could be a LOT bigger!

Building regs specify.

That's why they often wind around but on a canal there is usually a good length of towpath available, assuming sufficient width or land belonging to CaRT.

Well in practice the ability to accommodate wheelchairs etc. is limited by the geometry of the existing marina entrance bridge, so the new bridge need be no different.

But a new structure would almost certainly need to meet Building Regulations, so either a 1 in 20 (5%) continuous gradient or perhaps 1 in 12 with intermediate landings. Overall length will be much the same either way.

Thanks for all these - very useful.

Is anyone familiar with the towpath at Welford on the Welford Arm, my recollection is I had to walk round the outside of a small marina, someone has advised that there is a wooden footbridge with steps over the entrance. So, did I HAVE to walk round or did I CHOOSE to walk round? It is possible the bridge is there but not open to the public?

Yes, the towpath is diverted around the marina. Not far after the lock.
