Peter Duddigan
These pulleys will up the alto speeds to 6 times engine revs. Awaiting v belts to arrive. Made the adjustable pulley carriers to suit. What d'ya think?
Tracy D'arth
Proper, well made. Nice to see real engineering instead of cost engineering. Will the fan on the alternator run the right way? Should suck cold air in past the brushgear.
magnetman
Terrible. The paint will come off within minutes and those Plummer bearings are Chinese junk. Good effort from a visual point of view but you'll be cursing and throwing things in the cut in a fit of pique within seconds of the failures. 3 minutes ago, Tracy D'arth said: Proper, well made. The nicely painted green alternator looks a bit small considering all the effort made in this or is there a large frame one somewhere out of the picture ? Peter Duddigan
I'll ignore Magnetman. Bet he's a Bah Humbug character. Of course the paint will come off, who cares. As for the bearings they are skh and will only be spinning at 1200rpm. They'll see me out. FYI there are two alternators. Both alternators are clockwise running and fans run in correct direction. BEngo
Try to take the paint off the belt track area before using it. Otherwise the paint gets embedded in the rubber and it will not grip properly until renewed. Watch the belt tension. Those plummer blocks look a bit too close together for a tight belt and the bearing loads will be high.. N
Bee
Well I reckon that's impressive. Proper boating stuff. With a few more pulleys and belts you could run air con. off it and with some line shafting through to the kitchen grind coffee and run a food mixer and as for a macerating loo.......
Peter Duddigan
Thanks for advice. Heed taken. Funny you should mention air con....? and an air compressor. Don't know why, just fancy fitting one. The Ruston has a spare pulley running from the camshaft, used to drive the water pump.
BEngo
Well, if you fit an air compressor and a good reservoir you can then have proper truck horns. Very handy for blind bridgeholes 'cos only a big Woolwich or Northwich is going to argue with something that sounds like a Scania. Other uses could include a long air line and impact driver for those hard to wind paddles, or the non electric Nene gullantines. N
Tracy D'arth
A suction pump then you could have a real aircraft jobbie gobbler.
Peter Duddigan
Haha. Great ideas. Truck horns it is?
Sir Nibble
What? Not a steam whistle?
BEngo
Not many steam whistles work well on compressed air. Lots of complicated thermodynamics in the why. Shame really because an A4 chime whistle would be rather nice N
Peter Duddigan
We'll, it all runs ok. Gotta wire in the starter battery alto next. Advice welcome. At 495 engine rpm the intermediate drive runs at 890rpm and the alternator pulley runs at 3065rpm. Tested all speeds with a cheapo Chinese digital tachometer.
