Given that it's Black Friday soon, does anyone know if Midland Chandlers are planning a Freaky Friday or something similar, (or have I missed it :( ).

I'm going to buy a Victron inverter soon, so it would be good to get 15% off or similar :)

I've been looking out too.  I don't think they've run freaky friday for the last year or so.  Last year they did 15% for black friday, but heard nothing about that this year yet.

When I was last in a Midland Chandlers I was told there isn’t anymore. Usually April and October. All their prices are reduced, period, at least one branch recently closed.

Are they on the brink?

They are now owned by, I think, their third owners, the parent company being far larger than Midland as we knew them, so is a three shop business of uppermost interest to them?

Just my thoughts.

Not quite.  Midland Chandlers are part of Arleigh Group who also own ASAP Supplies, Aquafax etc.

They are part of LKQ, the big American company that own a variety of specialist parts suppliers worldwide - including Euro Car Parts.

Thanks all. Looks like 12voltplanet will be getting my money. Their price is even more "reduced" than Midland Chandlers :)

Victron Phoenix 2000VA Smart at £727

Is this after allowing for 5% IWA member discount at Midland, only have to ask normally.

Much as we all like to moan about the 'swindlers' I really hope not.  Bricks and mortar chandleries are a very useful thing when out on the cut, and they're getting rarer.  Oftentimes I've had really helpful advice from staff in the shops who really know their stuff.  I also find it handy to bring a part in which I don't know the specific name of and ask for "another one the same as this".  You can't do that on a website.

When I tried that, the joker said, "sorry we don't have any the same, but we do have some similar in stock that don't have that bit broken off"

12 volt Planet are good, but only for electrical stuff ?

Strangely I recently got some solar panels from them but when they arrived they had obviously shipped directly from a totally different company, but 12v Planet gave me a much better price than if I had dealt with that company directly.

MC will be doing a traders discount day indeed december.

More importantly, after this weekend, they will only be open Mon -Fri  9-5.30 until further notice.

Take care, they can shut up shop as early as 4:30 pm despite published hours to the contrary. If travelling far, phone to check.

I believe that is the way they will go in the future. Which will be no good for me. The cost of operating commercial properties nowadays and competing with online sellers is a challenge to say the least.

Ihave to confess, if I’ve got friends or relations coming to visit, obviously not recently, I get stuff delivered to them and they deliver to me. If I was nearby a chandlers I wouldn’t bother with the above. I like to browse.

Online can be not so good. I ordered a bathroom basin from them and it arrived promptly, but badly scratched. They shipped a replacement promptly, and the replacement arrived equally badly scratched in exactly the same way the first one was, which may indicate a systematic manufacturing fault, but they clearly hadn't inspected either of them. They arranged collection of both promptly and, after a bit if a delay, eventually refunded me. (I was going for a quick win tart-up of the bathroom by replacing the ancient beige basin with nice new white one, still available in the same design. Now going for a proper refit instead, which is what I should have done in the first place...)
