Great Canal Journeys

I watched the first episode last week (on the Thames) and wasn't impressed but I really enjoyed tonights program. We have never boated in that area so any out of sequence shots passed me by  but I found the obvious friendliness between Sheila and Gyles enjoyable and I felt that they understood and appreciated what they were told during their time off the boat.  I found the whole program interesting and it was good to see a bit of canal I wasn't familiar with.

Let's face it, no one is going to watch it for canal content, that looks like any other London waterway with lots of moored boats. The insight it gives into life around the waterway was interesting; loved the Chas & Dave bit, and must get down one day for pie &mash & eels (aren't they protected now?)

Pie and Mash is something you buy once

Same here.  I like Sheila although not a huge fan for Gyles.

I felt similarly about the previous pairing. At least Giles is gentlemanly enough not to blame Sheila for his own boat handling errors - quite the opposite in fact.  I have to say I prefer the new version.

Browns in Lincoln used to be very good

I've just looked it up.

As I suspected, this is not a Pie&Mash shop!  It's a restaurant which specialises in pies.  Totally different thing.  I shan't ask if they make their own liquor.  I doubt they even know what it is, or if you do.

My Dad, being aLondoner, took me one day for pie and Mash. A ‘treat’ I haven’t repeated. Desired taste?

There used to be a great pie and mash shop at Dalston Junction where the two son's baked their own pies at night and then each towed their own power boats, that they kept out the back of the premises, to the sea in the early morning.

There's only one Pie & Mash shop in Dalston I know of.  It's average at best, but cheap so...

Its not just London Skipton has a nice place as well, the advantage for me is they are both near big canals my boat goes on ?

But is it an actual Pie & Mash shop in the East London sense.

A proper pie & mash shop is a very specific thing, in terms of the menu, the service, and the decor.

Lincoln??????  Eh?

If you want Pie&Mash.  You go to East London, not Lincoln!

I had pie, mash and liquor at Manzi's in Chapel Street Market, London, I considered the eels but chickened out, if you get my drift. Enjoyed it. I was sorry to see that Manzi's shut down a little while ago after many years' trading.

Manze's is still very much going.  They still have a branch in Southwark near Tower Bridge and a couple of other places.

Eels are an acquired taste, you might say.

I've found it.  Again it's not a Pie & Mash shop (whatever it calls itself).  It's a Yorkshire Pie & Peas shop, that happens to serve mashed potato, as most similar places in Yorkshire do.

For those confused by the distinction:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_and_mash

Yes, I found a newspaper report saying that the Chapel Street branch was closing because of excessive business rates. But the owner was planning a new branch in Braintree.
