I'm fitting a new rope seal to the door of my Boatman stove. Would one normally add some cement or high temperature mastic to hold it in place?

You can get the correct glue to do this, but But I've found with mine that if the rope groove it scraped and cleaned out properly the rope will stay put on its own and will soon get impregnated with a bit of goo from the fire anyway which will hold it there.

Yes it should be glued in and, usually the rope comes with the glue or at least the place you bought the rope from should have given you choice of buying the glue with the rope. Whichever it needs to be glued in with the correct glue otherwise it WILL fall out.
