Leak off pipes, help!?

Dolly P.

Featured Posts

So I managed to snap a pipe...I believe its the leak off pipe... Or it's corroded off? But looks pretty snapped.

Problem is... The engine has no data plate... So I'm not 100% sure what engine it is? The survey report says he reckons its a mitsibushi, PRM delta ?‍♀️ but googling has come to no avail.

Is this repairable? Can I run it without if its just to return the unused fuel? Can I solder it back on? Or can anybody point me in the direction of a replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps if you'd googled Mitsubishi something may have come up.:) Anyway you would need to hard solder, silver solder or braze the pipe back in, soft solder is not allowed on fuel pipes.

You have snapped one pipe tail out of a twin banjo union. If you take it to your local fuel injection specialist they can probably supply you a new one and some suitable  plastic pipe or hose.. That assume the boat is set up so hose passes the BSS but you have hose/plastic pipe on there now.

I think those engines pass a lot of fuel out of the injector pump to make them self bleeding so you may have to block one side of the break so fuel does not pour out but if you d the engine may airlock. It all depends upon on exactly how its piped. you could use some hose to bypass the broken banjo and then it will all work OK but the back leakage from that injector shoudl not be very much, maybe only a drip or two unless the injector is badly worn.

Thank you so much, super helpful. I still haven't got a picture of the engine, i haven't had a minute of daylight time since Saturday, but after lots of googling i think it might be a thorneycroft T60? possibly. I don't suppose you'd know where i could find parts for those at all?

As I said your local diesel fuel system specialists but as we have no idea where you roughly are we can't give you any contacts details. They will probably be the cheapest. Otherwise look for a Mitsubishi agent, that banjo will be the same on a diesel car etc. If you are feeling rich then Vetus marine engines are Mitsubishi based so a Vetus agent should be able to supply. The part you want is a two spigot injector leak off banjo. I think but don't know for sure the BMC injector banjos will fit but they are often on metal pipe so are less likely to fit.

Its a generic part so as long as the two spigots and the hole in the middle are the correct size it won't matter what name is on the packet it comes out of.

I only have experience of the Stanadyne pump but that can send a large amount of diesel down the return line and if the return line is blocked the pump does not work correctly, similar symptoms to blocked filter.

With a bit of searching lots of banjos are available on-line.

Thank you so much. Do you reckon i can replace the whole leak off rail with plastic pipes/connectors like this one then?

Like what one?

Yes you can replace the whole leak off rail with one from a dealer providing it is compliant with the BSS or the system is set up to comply with the BSS.

Yes and DPx pumps plus the ones with a high leak off rate from inline pumps to make them self bleeding. The OPs photo suggest the injector pump is not so equipped and the leak off is just for injector leak by.

I agree, plenty available online and there should be a source in all larger towns but the OP seems to want to be given a specific link.

Many years ago A group of us had taken out the college minibus for a weekend field trip.  During the trip I noticed a fuel leak coming from a little pipe on the top of the engine.  Knowing little about diesel engines at the time I took a geological hammer to it and crimped it up.  Went fine for the rest of the weekend.  I don't know if it was ever fixed!

That happened on a coach taking us on a school trip in 1963 to Ross on Wye, the driver did the same thing

Thanks for all of your help everybody, following Tony's advice I took it to DFIS diesel injection services in Watford, super helpful and highly Reccomend! Has sorted it out for me for a good price. Thanks again, and thanks to everyone for the insight on what engine I might have!!

Probably. But you will end up with a lot of diesel in the bilges. Which will be a waste of expensive diesel, and a big problem to clean up.

Similar happened to us in 2009, fuel tank empty, bilge full of diesel.

Bought a new return pipe.

Had I known you were in the Watford area that's where I would have recommended. Did you manage to find a clear space on his counter? Notwithstanding that he's always willing to give advice and help.
