Winter Mooring in Winding Holes

Looking through the site maps of the East Midlands winter mooring stretches, I noticed that the Kilby Bridge and Welford plans run across vital winding holes. The Welford one is tight for a 70 footer with the dry dock opposite, and the Kilby Bridge hole very silted up so needing to be as close to the towpath as possible to turn.

A positive is that Stoke Bruerne seems to just be in the long pound, not above the lock as well anymore.

No warnings of potential flooding conditions at Sawley, Cranfleet or Barrow on Soar(3 WM boats sunk in last few years)

I moored the pair in the winding hole at Cowley in 1985 .  We had broken ice the whole way from little Venice, and tied up in the pitch dark. Early the next morning we were woken by a local permanent moored incandescent we were there.

The fact the canal had 2 inches of ice on it was beyond his grasp.

We heaved away later  amid moaning from the wooden boats above the lock ( sometimes you are wrong just for existing) and made it to the General Idiot in Uxbridge where the boats were frozen in for 4 weeks or so. We had to pass the cans over the bar to get fresh water, so spent a fortune on beer.

Some places that look like winding holes were originally wharves and privately owned (some still are). They may well have been adapted for paid-for moorings and occasionally have No Winding/No Turning notices at them. As with most canal things, there are more examples than rules!
