Tony Brooks
No idea where it is but there seems to be a "pole" to the right of the canal that might be a railway signal. There also seem to be what, from the date, I take to be a largish curch tower

Well you have just given the answer away. ?? Location removed removed to see if others get it, or indeed how posting the photo has given it away. They now all have baffles to direct the water sideways (and reduce the flow rate significantly). Before the baffles were fitted you used to get a huge square flow of water straight out from the gate. Could sink an open fronted boat in minutes if you were foolish enough to open the gate paddle before the bows had risen above paddle level. p.s. Last time I boated on the Wey they still had some like this. Edited October 2, 2020 by David Mack
Derek R.
Shroppie: Leaking Going up Wigan flight breasted up someone cracked a gate paddle - just a little - and it sent a deluge up in an arc and straight into our front well. Couldn't shut it either. Months later when cleaning out the fore end, we found a newt under the boards still alive.
