Sailing the Soar (Hopefully)

Wasn't a great morning for cruising. We decided to head back to the marina for a couple of nights. Will have a run out to the coast in the car tomorrow.

Sis is well on the way to recovery, may have to have corrective surgery. Archie has found an ideal home. Someone who lost her dog not too long ago.

Driven past it umpteen times skippering the Notts Princess and whacked the vhf aerial on Trent bridge a few times. We had to be precise going under there especialy with a flow on or we would have taken the roof off.

118 Miles and 20 Locks for this trip including our last cruise to Saxilby for a pizza on Saturday night.

 

We have used less than a half tank of diesel. Without brimming it again we reckon it has used about 80 litres of diesel which includes plenty of use of the diesel heater as well.

 

We have had a good long think about what we are going to do with the boat this last couple of weeks and have decided that we are going to keep it for another couple of years at least. Next year we are going to move it to Farndon Marina at the end of May when our mooring at Burton Waters runs out. It is time for a change of scenery. We have been on the Fossdyke for 12 years now, time to move on.

 

As we plan to keep it there are a whole list of upgrades and jobs that we want to do too her which should keep us busy for a while. We don't expect we will be allowed to get much cruising in this winter with various lock downs but we do hope that we will at least be able to carry out some of the planned upgrades ready for next summer.

Better hope we don't get banned from visiting boatyards and marinas during the next lockdown then!

Who knows what the next lock down rules will be?

 

We are working on there being no overnight stays allowed and no mixing with those outside your household which is fine that will still give us a chance to get some work done.

Passed you moored in Newark returning from almost exactly the same trip you were intending. We made it to Kegworth and I have to say that the Soar is a beautiful river. However, I dont think we'll be trying it again...

Lots of fun going through Nottingham -except flash white boats like ours dont exactly suit low stone faced banks and very very low bridges! But the the most stressful part was between Beeston and Cranfleet. The river was ridiculously low. Despite following the CRT guidance, the depth alarm was going off every couple of minutes and around Barton Island, we grounded a couple of times attempting to find a way through without leaving a load of fibreglass on the river bed!

But  - it was an adventure!

They have supposedly dredged around Barton Island.

 

We gave up at Nottingham Castle. Until they do something about the state of the canal there we won't be heading up there again. Both locks were broken, the water level was a good 6" down, which may not seem a lot but when you are towards the deeper end of the max draft dimension makes a lot of difference. We struggled to even get into the edge to moor up on the visitor moorings.

 

A real shame as we enjoyed the Soar the last time we visited and with our plan to move the boat onto the Trent next year this will now limit our cruising options.
