Sailing the Soar (Hopefully)

We had a lovely day at Cromwell today. The dogs have run themselves ragged. Sydney is now fast asleep he won't be much trouble tonight.

We had a very steady run up to Newark. The chap working the lock at Nether was very gentle with filling the lock it took an age!

We are now on the pontoon moorings for the evening. Think we are going to get a curry later.

Yesterday we had a lovely day on the river with hardly a boat on the move. The weather was just about perfect for it. We settled for mooring at Gunthorpe and having a few beers in the Unicorn before heading back to the boat for steak and all the trimmings.

Has any dredging been done at Hazleford lock or is the new "island" still there?

The island at Hazelford is gone but the one at Stoke is still there and on the move again.

We clipped the edge of the one at Stoke this morning and we well right of the marker bouys.

I managed to get stuck on the crap below Stoke a few years ago,  I think I was the first boat through after the floods.

Eventually I got the stern close enough to jump off, and having secured a rope to a tree went up to the control panel and started filling and emptying the lock in an attempt to flush the boat off the shoal.

A bloke moored above the lock watched me fannying around between the pedestals for half an hour before announcing that his wife on the boat was a volunteer and had the keys for the control tower!  Priceless.

What an absolutely beautiful day to be out and about on the boat. The weather has been perfect.

We have had a cracking cruise from Gunthorpe into Nottingham.

We are having a day in Nottingham today due to the rain forecast for this afternoon.

We have decided tomorrow we are heading back down onto the Trent. The weather forecast for tomorrow is dry but the rest of the week and into next week looks decidedly wet. So we will take advantage of a dry day tomorrow to get the hoods off and the arch down and escape the canal. Dont mind wet weather cruising on the Trent when we can have the hoods up and the heating on.

We will have a steady run back downstream and think we will head down to West Stockwith and perhaps down to Keadby depending on what progress we make.

Nottingham to Gunthorpe.

We are here for a couple of nights now as the weather looks rubbish.

We have been lucky today though. It was supposed to rain on and off all day but has only just started. Not bothered now we are tucked up on the boat with a couple of beers.

Should the title be changed to not boating on the Soar because it started raining ?

Probably  ???

Looks like we made the right decision though given the number of stoppage notices i got today for shut flood gates up that way!

We had a very pleasant cruise from Newark to Torksey yesterday with plenty of water around. Torksey lock only went up a few inches. We had to wait a while at Torksey until a few very large lumps of wood were removed from the lock entrance.

My sister in her seventies, suffered a fall recently. Multiple breaks to an arm and shoulder. Now in convalescence.

This is Archie, her dog. A decision was made to rehome him following lots of painful considerations. He moves on Saturday. I’m posting this as he looks a bit like the dog above.
