Covering Boat

Hi
Please can anyone help/ advise. We are having to paint our boat and conscious of the variety of weather we will be having. As the boat is coming out to be blacked thought we would cover and paint at the same time. Any advice with regards to covering ie purchase, hire or make. Had a quote for £1250?

For that price you could get a heated covered dock and have it professionally blacked.

 

You don't want to be painting in the outside in October as the dew point will mean cold, damp metal as dew point is reached and neither Blacking or Paint will adhere and you will be needing to do it all over again come Spring time.

 

If you cannot get it in a heated dry dock, cancel your plans and start again in May 2021

Just a Google search, I can't vouch for the quality, but it's a tad cheaper that your quote! If I were buying it I'd ask the supplier to send me a small sample of the material first.

 

I might do the same thing next summer as there's no covered dry dock anywhere near me that I know of, just an uncovered slipway.

Thank you for this . Hadn’t realised it was going to cost so much to cover the boat. Had two quotes one for£2250 and another for £1600 from scaffolding companies. Thought there might have been a company specialising  in the service?

There are. They're known as covered dock operators.

 

Not your neck of the woods, but your £1250 would get you a week out on the slipway for hull blacking and a week in wet dock for top side painting at Aylesbury. Both covered and heated.

From Adlington, options for covered wet or dry docks are:

 

Wigan dry dock

Worsley dry dock

Fettlers Wharf wet dock

St Mary's paint shed/slipway

 

Or going the other way,

 

Bank Hall dry dock

Lower Park marina wet dock

Pennine Cruisers dry dock

 

 

If you are going to Botany Bay, ask Ian the boat painter to put you in contact with Kevin, or ask Mark if you can go under the scaffold tent next to the containers for an extra charge.

 

Andy at Wheelton also has existing tents if you are going there, but they are usually in constant use.
