Short detached navigations

Although not navigable, the Ffrwdd Canal has a bit in water and it was always a detached part of the Ellesmere Canal.

Then when the Shropshire Tub boats are investigated, their working canal sections were detached from the others

There is also detached canals in Staffordshire, which was Sir Nigel Gresley's and the Newcastle Junction Junction Canal which were separate from the canal network

The Charnwood Forest Canal, or the Forest Line of the Leicester Canal Navigations was a canal section between two tramways

And then there was Benjamin Yardley's canal, but Patrick you will need to look at the RCHS Waterways History Group observations on that.

In Gas Street Birmingham there is a short length of restored basin, in the 1990's, that is.

In a way it fits the criteria as a detached canal. It is also perhaps unique in that it was built for the Dudley Canal Company acting under the guise as the Netherton Coal Company. and was maintained by the Dudley Canal Company, It served the gas works and also carriers houses when it was at its full length. This basin extended from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal under Gas Street and Berkeley Street and as far as Granville Street.

There are bits on the BCN on the part above Sneyd Locks and there used to be the Danks Branch, which now seem to have been lost by the action of that Great Developer in the Sky.

Thats the first image I have seen of the Danks Branch

Not sure if you have it, but dont forget the Aylsham Navigation in Norfolk (a great canoe trip)

This is an odd one. Is it detatched, or is it not? Greasborough Canal in Rotherham. A water connection to the Sheff & S Yorkshire, but an air draft of around 6" maximum to get under with the original movable bridges being replaced by fixed versions. Unlikely to ever be connected again as one of the bridges takes a main railway and tram line.

Pic taken this morning while heading through.

The Long Water canal at Hampton Court might fit in here. Not really a canal as such and only 3800ft long but it is a long thin straight man made waterway :)

3800 feet is longer than some of the other contenders, at least as regards length of clear water!

Patrick have you had a boat in at Paulton yet?

One of the adjacent land owners has had pedalo's on it - we're currently trying to fix leaks and create a single piece of water - to do the latter we have to do the former otherwise the basins dry out. After heavy rain the canal is brim full all the way to Withymills stop. but when the rain stops....

At least some part of the Wilts & Berks is in water, but I don't know if it's navigable.

In swindon There’s a section with a trust boat on that does day trips (non COVID)

chippenham is the longest section but again only trust work boats on it, it’s very shallow at the moment due to the dry weather and a potential leak. I was in it on Sunday in waders clearing weeds and I never went deeper than waste height
