Hi,

We are new to the boating world, in the process of buying a widebeam barge, 69ft x12ft, we are looking for a winter mooring, near to London, but not right in London.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Susiepea

You probably don’t want to hear this but it might have been advisable to find a mooring before buying the boat. The area you want to moor in is difficult to find any type of mooring in never mind a wide beam. You can find marinas and boatyards on Canal and River Trusts website and you need to get on there and start ringing around. Not all places will allow you to live permanently on the boat so you need to check that as well. Good luck.

I wonder if OP will ever ask another Q?

It might have been beneficial if she had asked questions before buying a 69 x 12 boat for use on Britain's most congested waterway.

C&RT say that there are over 5000 boats registered with them that are based in 'London'

In a 2017 Survey C&RT found :

Key headlines

58% of respondents to the survey say they use their boats as their primary home.

69% of respondents said they are currently living on a boat in the London waterway area.

50% of those who responded said that affordability / financial reasons what a motivation for living on a boat.

50% have been living on boats on London’s waterways for three years or less.

Over 70% of respondents to the survey said that they owned their boats outright, a further 11% said they owned their boat with a loan or mortgage.

33% of respondents said that their boat had experienced mechanical issues in the past 12 months that has prevented them from moving it.

The top five specific improvement people want to see on the London waterways are

(1) more mooring places,

(2) more mooring rings,

(3) water points,

(4) more Elsan facilities,

(5) more dredging.

34% of those living on boats are under the age of 35

5% of those living on boats are over the age of 65

63 children under the age of 16 living on boats identified through the survey.

43% of those living on boats live alone.

42% of those living on boats live as part of a cohabiting couple.

12% of those living on boats live as part of a wider family group.

45% responding said they would have some or definite interest in a mooring if permanent / long-term moorings were more readily available in the London The most important factors when considering a permanent / long-term mooring (other than price) were

(1) somewhere people feel personally safe,

(2) good services nearby (sewage and rubbish etc),

(3) public transport nearby.

77% of respondents said they are white (English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British), this rises to 89% when white other is included.

10% said that their day-to-day activities are limited because of a health problem or disability which has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months

Look back to 13 hours ago, you are no better or worse than anyone else.

Not criticising anyone, honestly.

I  think OP might just have realised signing the first cheque is only the start of a totally new life,

and she may not be fully committed ................ I mean , financially!

It may not be too late to do a bit more research.

I stayed in one marina for 12 months, it was awfull, but others think it's a great place ..........

And she never has, I wonder if she actually coped with life aboard, or was just testing the water.

Strangely, she had been a member for several months before making her one and only post - since when she has never returned to the site.

She did say that they were "in the process of" buying this monster boat; perhaps they changed their minds.

I am also searching for this in this region but unable to find mooring.....

You and probably 5,000 others, which will be why you can't find one!

As advised upthread, find a mooring before buying a boat.... unless you like a stressful life CCing around in an uncomfortably large boat.

Here you go:

https://www.watersidemooring.com/430-brentford-island-l1/Vacancies#berth5175

Bidding starts at £12k a year.

Cheaper things on there for narrow beam and non-resi.

I used to pay £3,600/p.a. for a widebeam mooring there. That's the cost of living crisis for you!

Mind you, I left 12 years ago.

It would be helpful to know an idea of location.
