Just a passing thunderstorm.

We're currently in the drydock at Northwich and today has been interesting. Just after lunch, the bottom of the drydock ceased being dry. There was definitely more leakage round and through the gates, but not that much, and the drain paddle is left open so the leakage just flows away. But wait: it wasn't flowing away. In fact most of the water was coming in through the drain paddle. As quick look and the level above the entrance gate was up about a foot, but the sluices were wide open, and all the water they were dumping had raised the level on the lower pound about three feet. That's why water was backflowing through the drain. The very efficient chaps from the boatyard arrived with a board to block the culvert, and a couple of submersible pumps and in no time we were dry again. An hour later the sluices were closed, the upper pound down about a foot, the lower pound back to normal, and it was all over. So that's what a thunderstorm looks live passing down a river!

Lucky you weren't there in the winter floods or worse in the covered wet dock

The winter floods were when the routine with the boards and pumps was developed. Apparently the fact that Spey was in there, sans several side planks, concentrated their minds somewhat.

It turns out that my assumption about the thunderstorm was just that. The actual cause of the sudden flood was that the sluices at Vale Royal got very confused, opened to 100% and refused to close again. A considerable portion of the contents of the pound about Vale Royal and the two flashes was sent down to us before things were got back under control. I've heard rumours of sunken boats as a result. :(
