Antisocial boaters

I did meet a boater who had suffered serious anti-social behaviour including thieving from another boat. He waited till said boater was away and drilled a hole in the bottom of his boat.

I won't be doing anything like that 😁 but I can think of a few characters who definitely would think of something to do to his boat.

I've moved now. Hopefully I won't encounter the guy again. I doubt he'll be the last knobhead I'll see on my travels sadly.

The canals are one of the few remaining places where there are very few rules and regulations and even less enforcement of these rules, and this makes them increasingly attractive to those who want to drink or drug themselves senseless, indulge in selfish and antisocial behaviour, and generally give a free rein to their personality disorders.

You must have been thinking along similar lines to me: IU was wondering if excessive drink or drugs might have been involved in Izzy's neighbour's poor standard of behaviour.

Might explain the two gennies.

I don't know. I think I'd rather not know. I'm just happy to be away from him.

I'm an engineer who has always worked and mostly socialised with other sane educated people (🙂?) so have little knowledge of the theories behind defective humans. My own observations suggest that personality disorders and drink/drugs tend to go hand in hand but I don't know which comes first, I suspect its a bit like chickens and eggs?

I have personal experience of trying to turn babies into sane adult humans and it can be a bit challenging at times, so I suspect a lot of parents just give up before they've got the job done.

You are assuming todays parents are a good role model or even understand the concept of what the "job" is and its end product - innit

This bloke should definitely be reported to both CRT and the local Police - after you are well clear of him and his boat of course - a tendency towards antisocial behaviour soon escalates

Its not a crime to be an a***hole, if it was the police would be even more overworked and the prisons would be bursting.

As for the end product of parenting its easy, I just tried to make them turn out like an even better version of me 🙂. I suppose thats the problem, the a***holes just produce lots of little a****holes, or maybe lots of even bigger a****holes.

I have just looked in unbelieving horror as a boy aged about 12 got off a hire boat that was coming up through Hillmorton bottom lock carrying two bags of rubbish and ignoring the bins, threw them both into an attractive flowerbed on private property and ran back to what I guessed were his parents.  All looked well dressed respectable intelligent people.

I carefully picked the bags out of the flowers and put them in the Biffa skip provided by CRT.  I then telephoned the Hire Company whose management promised to speak to them harshly.

It's getting worse isn't it? Or is it just me getting old?

10 Brownie points there. I get some odd looks when I sweep up rubbish in the cut, especially whilst on the move.

I despair of the kids and their parents these days, my parents would of tanned my backside if I had done that.

Sadly in society in general we have a developing sub class. They dont care about 'authority', rules, guidlines or anything that normal people wouldnt mind adhering to.

You can tell who they are when you challenge such behaviour as you usually get told to go forth and procreate, usually by the parents in front of the kids who then think such behaviour is completely acceptable and normal. And so they carry on and the behaviour replicates.

So to answer your question, yes I do think things are slowly getting worse regarding parenting, parental control and some kids understanding what is acceptable behaviour and what is not.

The best thing the hire company could do would be to bar them from hiring again. Sadly thats probably the best 'punishment' available.

I had a similar situation a few years back the guy was also marching up and down drunk as a skunk pretending he was in Dads Army I kid you not with an air rifle, I was waiting for the inevitable splash.

I called the police because I was fearful and they came out and made him move, he hasnt spoken to me since and still blames me for all thats wrong in his life, what gets me about these characters is they can go out into the middle of no where and fill their boots but no they have to do it smack bang in the middle of everyone else.

If moving is an option I always take that option but doing things in the dark is quite some skill down a dark canal where you can misjudge your footing or you cant moor for ages the list goes on.

All the best.

I would have been tempted, having picked up said rubbish bags, to have walked up to the middle or top lock. and slung them back on their boat.

My thoughts entirely, though in my case they would probably have remained just thoughts.

It was a thought but why should I have the aggravation and stress of confrontation with dull people.

I did like the thoughtful words of The Happy Nomad above.............

It is often the way to deal with these people.

We have done it with KFC wrappers before when idiots have just tossed them out of a car window. We have picked them up and tossed them back in their car. They got the idea though and put the wrappers in the bin which was right next to their car!

As an empty working boat on my mooring, I would often find a rubbish bag deposited in my hold! Grrr!

Please, there are females using this forum, using such language is not welcomed or necessary, certainly not clever.

I for one will not tolerate it, I'd rather leave.

You are easily offended if one word will cause you to leave a forum 🤔

Yes I am. I am also possible old enough to be your mother, you would not speak to your mother that way.

Your apology is accepted, thank you very much for your respect.  Mark of a gentleman, acknowledges his errors, and rights the wrongs.

Yes I would. I would tell her to stop being a drama queen.

I find use of the word “female” to be highly offensive. Using such language is not welcomed nor necessary, certainly not clever. I for one will not tolerate it. I’d rather leave.
