Many hire companies nowadays simply provide a DVD (which you may or may not bother to watch) showing you how to operate a lock, rather than providing proper instructions. For many years now, the instruction from Gayton has been "Just go to the first lock and wait for another boat who can show you what to do". Having said that, if they were coming down Buckby they must have got at least some experience of locking - although this may be only their 2nd one descending.

Went up Saturday, back down on Sunday.

I got up OK yesterday thanks @matty40s and @Rob-M and moored just past Norton Junction but I have a horrible feeling this boat is the one I shared the top five locks with yesterday.
