Lock 1 Wardle lock Middlewich branch SUC 2/8/20

You should know by now nothing gets fixed until it's completely broken. Half the locks on the T&M doubles are out of action and a fair few of the others have bust paddles. What with a landslip on the Shroppie, any hire boat trying to do the 4 counties in a week is stuffed!

How long has that first paddle been bust? Must be a year by now.

How true! That paddle has been out for well over a year...you might have thought lockdown was a good time to look at it....asked CRT for more info on the landslide but heard nothing back....once again it’s looking poor in the north west.

We were last boat up, fortunately for us, initially diagnosed as faulty paddle , now blown cill. Top lock padlocked (no sign). Closed until at last the weekend. Hire boat behind us who didn’t make it paid over £4K for a 3 week holiday From Wyvern Linslafe went south but broken lock beam so headed North. But latest boaters update suggest weather and lack of use is to blame.....

Maureen must be turning in her grave at the debacle at her lock. I find it hard to understand why CaRT hadn't sorted out a problem that they must have been aware of for over 12 months. Wardle lock must be one of the busiest in the north west and a vital link up here.

If Parry's boys don't get their act together, Maureen will be up and after them, with as she said " windlass between the clogs".

Don't mess with a red head who was sold for 2/6d in the Cheshire Cheese.

A very helpful lady if you didn't cross her.

The reason should be obvious: Better to erect hundreds of 'woof woof' signs than spend the money on vital infrastructure maintenance. It's all about how things look, rather than how things work.

Wardle Canal Latest.

Anglo Welsh hire boats being pulled backwards to the next winding hole between bridges 17 and 18, about three and half miles.

Hirers expected to still get back to base. It will take them the best part of the day before they wind.

The reason?   No body in attendance at the lock, no work being done. C&RT have abandoned the boaters to their fate.

DISGUSTING.

I'm moored nearby. Another boater told me the lock is re opening this afternoon but I don't know if this is correct or not. Meanwhile, boating around here appears to have become a contact sport. Why do some boaters, who can't control their boats properly, insist on reversing at full throttle? I mean, the lock is closed, you're not going anywhere, isn't it better to reverse slowly so you can keep better control?

NOW OPEN!!

Update on 03/08/2020:

We are pleased to advise the repair to Lock 1 (Wardle Lock) on the Shropshire Union Canal, Middlewich Branch has been successful, and navigation has resumed.

Hopefully they have fixed both paddles.
