The Curdworth flight has ground paddles at both ends of the locks, e.g. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3672660 . A fault with one of the paddles at the bottom gate end would allow the lock to drain, possibly causing a problem with completely filling the lock.

That's what I would think so fixing the paddle will sort the leak out stopping the lock from draining, simples.

Excellent.  Good old C&RT.

Can we find out which paddle was leaking?

There was a boat yesterday, in front of Swallow, that was reported as ramming the lock gate whilst going down, perhaps this is why?

The branch has been busy this week I'm told.

More likely a top ground paddle. Only one was working a few weeks ago...guessing the other one failed

When she was there the lock filled at a reasonable rate, probably one paddle then would be faster than both of them full open now.

Both top paddles on Wardle lock were cut back many years ago. Its an overlong grading lock for tolls and many not full length boats get dragged forward when going up. The nearside one especially was shortened. You can see folk racking them up and come to a sudden unexpected stop!

This made the lock safer, but slightly slower filling.

There was a bad accident there years ago, a boat hammered into the top gate and a woman went overboard off the bow. A younger Maureen pulled her out from under the boat, she knew where she would be.

Any problems on this lock were fixed PDQ or Maureen nagged the living daylights out of the lengthsman.

How can you possibly get dragged forward if you are riding the plate?

;)

You mean butting the babby?  Not any longer, too much water leaking from under the top gates into the well deck, around here certainly.

I agree with that...my preference until the last couple of years...now even with a deck board I’m getting water where it shouldn’t be due to leakage.

Does mean that with a 50ft boat we need to be careful or we get shot down the chamber...had to have words with some people who love to whip a paddle right up as quick as they can.
