That is what I was searching for last week, the heel post on the lock gate that fits into the stone quoin.

 

So there is a epidemic of heel post failures? This is the third in a  month.

 

Cause?

Almost certainly lack of inspection for whatever reason.  It cannot be vandalism, boater carelessness,  or the weather.  I will be interested to know why it leads to a water shortage, are C&RT only installing gates on one end of locks now to save maintenance? New policy? I think there is a fundamental flaw in that idea.

Update on 15/07/2020:

 

We have made failed gate safe but this will only allow  navigation for narrow boats & not wide beam vessels 

We are currently unable to offer booked passage for widebeams until a temporary fix can be made.

Seems the lock is back in business for narrowboats only, hope Stationmaster is not a wide boat.

 

I am a bit concerned that the eventual repair will be protracted as the have restored passage at least for some.

It'll be a bodge repair like at Denham deep. 

 

Steel work to cover over the rotten parts. 

 

Hopefully this gets followed up by gate replacement but I would not tend to be holding breath about this. 

 

There are a lot of rotten gates about. I wonder if there was an epidemic of bad quality gates in the 90s and early 00s. 

 

Was this something to do with contracting out gate manufscture to someone else rather than keeping it in house ie British Waterways. 

 

They did do some Dutch ones a company called "Wijma" but I think those were mainly the K&A. 

 

GU is another thing but definitely some issues me thinks. 

 

 

Of course the fact lock gates last about 20 years could have something to do with it. 

 

And changing the collar straps to a threaded nut design rather than the slotted type with hog rings and collar keys could have an effect on heel posts.

Our suppliers are fabricating a replacement steel heel following an engineers visit.

Navigation is restricted to wide-beams but narrowboats will be able to use the other lock gate to navigate through the lock in the meantime.

We hope to be in a position to undertake heel repair works at Lock 32 towards the end of July.

Seems to be confusion at lock 71 GU, its now not open to narrowboats either. Wish they would make their minds up and fix something rather than just looking and closing. If its another heel post they have a fabricated metal fix already so why close the lock?

Update on 20/07/2020:
The lock and gate have been made safe and engineers have been to site this morning. Unfortunately a repair isn’t possible and new lock gates are required to be manufactured to enable this lock to be fully open.

Our construction teams are mobilising equipment to look to see if we can do something to at least get the lock open to narrow beam craft until the gates can be replaced. We will update this notice by Friday 24 July
