I am not very mechanically minded but am considering a narrowboat powered by an FNM engine. I have not heard of this make before which I believe is Italian. Does anybody have experience of these and would I have problems getting a boatyard to service it?

Thank you

I had never heard of them either but a swift Google enlightened me. The Italian version of their site I think says its based on the GM B platform which I take to be General Motors but the English version makes no such mention. Of more concern to me is they describe them as being hybrid engines with electrical speed control. They are also direct injection which is normally good but also described as very clean burning so that tends to confirm electronic control.

Mermaid Marine seem to be the UK agent.

From this I conclude that its very likely that you may need specialist computer type equipment for fault finding and the average canal mechanic/yard would be very unfamiliar with the procedures. I dare say routine servicing (oils & filters) will be simple enough but anything more could be problematic.

Hopefully someone with direct experience will be along but from what I have read  I would tend to avoid. having said that electronic engine control is normally far more reliable that traditional methods but harder to diagnose properly when/if things go wrong.

Looking at the difficulties that people have with 'mainstream canal friendly engines' and getting them fixed, I would advise caution ( = avoid)   as there's alost a certainty that when and if it goes wrong, there will be  technical / physical help available...
